🌍 Advancing Europe's Sustainable Transport Future 🌍 The IKEA Foundation is dedicated to working on transformations both big and small to make a real impact. One of our commitments is to make road transport more sustainable. We’re proud to announce that our support to the European Climate Foundation has delivered remarkable results in driving the electrification of transport in Europe, with CO2 standards for cars and trucks serving as a key catalyst. Through our partnership, we have contributed to transformative work across Brussels, EU member states, and cities to accelerate the transition to clean mobility. One of the highlights we’d like to celebrate is the ground-breaking agreement on the EU Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Regulation. This regulatory milestone not only reinforces Europe’s commitment to developing sustainable, cross-border transport infrastructure, but for the first time, 424 European cities are now legally required to promote zero-emission mobility by 2027. This agreement is a critical step towards fully decarbonising Europe’s transport system, ensuring cleaner, more equitable cities for residents. Key elements of the regulation include: 🚗 Expansion of recharging infrastructure across cities and multimodal freight terminals. 🚶♀️ Investment in public transport, walking, and cycling infrastructure. 📊 Collection of urban sustainability and safety data to inform future policy and campaigns. As Europe advances towards a reliable and high-quality transport network, this new regulation sets clear deadlines to complete core, extended, and comprehensive networks by 2030, 2040, and 2050 respectively. The inclusion of high-speed rail connections and extension of European Transport Corridors to Ukraine and Moldova are additional steps towards a more connected, resilient continent. The collaboration between governments, businesses, and foundations like ECF and the IKEA Foundation, is critical in making this transition a reality. Together, we are not just reducing emissions but also paving the way for an inclusive, sustainable mobility system for all 🧑🤝🧑 #SustainableMobility #TEN_T #Electrification #ZeroEmission #CO2Standards #RoadTransportTransformation #GreenTransport #CleanCities #Decarbonisation

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 According to the United Nations’ Global Land Outlook Report 2022, the global food system significantly impacts the environment, contributing up to a third of annual greenhouse gas emissions, 80% of deforestation, and 70% of biodiversity loss. At the same time, the world is experiencing persistent hunger with the Global Hunger Index (2024) indicating that over 18.3 million people in 2024 remain hungry and this is threatening the goal of zero hunger by 2030 globally. Tackling these challenges is critical for the wellbeing of people and our planet. Michael Kwame Nkonu, our head of Agricultural Livelihoods Portfolio recently attended the IUCN Leaders Forum where IUCN’s flagship report on ‘Agriculture and Conservation – Living Nature in a Globalized World’, was launched. The report was jointly funded by the IKEA Foundation. Here are some of Michael’s key takeaways: 𝟭. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: Access to finance remains a major stumbling block to the transformation of the food system. In Africa, only 5% of commercial finance is directed to the agricultural sector, and a significant portion of this goes to support commodities such as coffee, tea and cocoa. Transformation of the food system at scale will require significant access to finance for farmers and agri-entrepreneurs. 𝟮. 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: While the science and data on the benefits of nature-positive food production keeps improving, there is still a need for comprehensive data tracking and access on food system transformation at different levels – local, national, regional, and global. 𝟯. 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. The twin objectives of biodiversity conservation and increased food production can be pursued simultaneously with improved understanding of the dynamics and trade-offs. Greater focus on biodiversity conservation can improve food production, reduce agriculture's impact on the climate, and boost overall economic returns. You can download and read the full IUCN report here: https://lnkd.in/ecEJxv8Z Together, we can create a more sustainable food system for everyone. #SustainableAgriculture #Biodiversity #ClimateChange #IKEAFoundation #IUCN

Great insights from Haileselassie Medhin, Director of Programmes – People at IKEA Foundation, on building the right ecosystem of philanthropy at the Local Power, Global Impact: Advancing Climate Resilience event in The Netherlands. 🌍 #ClimateResilience
It was great to meet so many of you in The #Netherlands at our Local Power, Global Impact: Advancing Climate Resilience event, ahead of #COP29. If you weren't able to make it, here's what you missed: 🔊 Dahabo Shalle, CEO of the Rights Organization for Advocacy and Development (ROAD), described the negative impacts the #ClimateCrisis is already having on the environment, rural economies and livelihoods in Northern Kenya. Her insights into how INGOs and donors can better support locally led climate initiatives like hers included longer-term funding, greater co-creation, and anticipatory action to ensure initiatives can respond early when disaster strikes. She emphasized that communities must have their voices heard and be integral to governance structures in order to support peace and foster lasting resilience. 🤝 Haileselassie Medhin, Director of Programmes – People at IKEA Foundation stressed the importance of building the right ecosystem of philanthropy, highlighting that "We [Foundations] need to stay small and nimble. It’s not just about shifting funding from big partners to small; it’s about how the partnership is designed.” 🌿 Ivo Demmers, Executive Director at the Netherlands Food Partnership shared that effective partnerships begin with a clear shared goal, saying, “Partnerships start with ‘What do we want to achieve?’ and a local roadmap.” He shared his experience of working in partnership not only with civil society, but also with the private sector, financial institutions, local government, and farmers, to ensure systemic change. The need to channel funding, resources and decision-making toward locally driven #adaptation efforts has never been more critical. Mercy Corps’ ambitious Climate: Possible initiative is dedicated to investing $250 million to bolster community-led resilience worldwide. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ey3-KRc5 #ClimatePossible #ClimateResilience

“I wanted to use the power of the law to fight climate change,” says our #changemaker, Meena Kamath. Meena is Head of Built Environment at The Chancery Lane Project, which has created more than 170 climate-related clauses that lawyers can write into contracts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She believes that deep systemic-level change can only take place if businesses and communities are brave enough to challenge the status quo and work together as part of a global community. 🧑🤝🧑 “My hope is that if we collaborate and listen to each other, we can understand that we're all affected by climate change.” 🌍 Learn more about her incredible work 👇 https://lnkd.in/eXt9ENJR #ChangemakerSeries #BuiltEnvironmentTransformation #ClimateChange #ClimateContracts

We are happy to see our support for Re:BUiLD programme with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) mentioned in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Together, we're investing €30 million ($33.4 million) to help 20,000 refugees and host community members in Kampala and Nairobi earn additional income. By prioritizing cost-effective interventions like business grants over vocational training, the IRC has saved 30% in costs, which has enabled them to support more people to have a predictable source of income. Shifting resources to more impactful approaches for even 1% of urban displaced populations worldwide could lead to $230 million in cost-efficiency gain, potentially reaching around 200,000 more people. You can read more about it in the Stanford Social Innovation Review article. https://lnkd.in/e6aRmNuE Let's continue to innovate and improve the lives of displaced communities! #RefugeeSupport #Innovation #IKEAFoundation
