How do you highlight your unique qualities when networking?

I often find traditional networking very transactional, selfish, and opportunistic. Dare I say, Networking is broken, no one likes doing it or going. Every attendee comes with the same objective – to sell something to recoup the money they paid to attend. Break from that habit and start putting more thought when creating your value proposition as a basis for your introduction, follow-up etc. In other words, don't make it too sales-y. It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you are true to yourself. If you honour your commitments and do not make excuses. Emphasise authenticity and integrity to add more depth to your value prop over prioritizing selling oneself. Advocate for a genuine connection

Before diving into networking, it's crucial to recognize what you bring to the table. People naturally gravitate towards individuals who can enrich their lives, whether personally or professionally. Reflect on your experiences, skills, career trajectory, and network. These are all assets that others will likely find compelling. Once you've considered these aspects, craft a clear value proposition that you can use to introduce yourself, follow up with contacts, and engage in conversations effectively. Understanding and confidently articulating your own value proposition is key to making meaningful connections.

Start by crafting a value proposition that succinctly summarizes on the elements that set you apart from others in your field. The next step is translating this value proposition into a clear Elevator Pitch that does not sound salesy and create a plan on how to follow up on your initial meeting

To highlight one’s qualities during networking : 1. Use storytelling as a pedagogy and to make an impact 2. Use numbers to highlight the metrics 3. Use testimonials and case studies

It starts from within. I've done the self-reflection to understand my core strengths, passion projects, and what fuels me. My internal clarity comes through. Approach interactions with genuine curiosity to learn about others first. It's about their story, then finding common ground. Based on context, customise how to frame what to do to resonate, but stay true to your essence. No pretence. After connecting, add unique value like sending a relevant article or making an introduction.

One thing to keep in mind is that this will change with every meeting you have or event you go to. For example, I coach, speak, and train on authentic relationship building (i.e. networking) online and off. This includes LinkedIn coaching for business owners, speaking to teams and companies on how to network without feeling gross, and training on relationship building. So if I'm at a local event of business owners I tend to focus on and introduce my unique quality of LinkedIn coaching, and when I'm at a large conference with executives and heads of teams, I may talk more on my speaking on relationship building and what makes me qualified in that realm. Don't be afraid to change up your value proposition!

Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of sticking to yes/no questions, ask ones that encourage deeper conversations. For example: “What inspired you to pursue your career in [field]?” “Tell me about a project you’re passionate about.”

However, networking is a dialogue not a monologue. To network more effectively, use these three steps to stand out: 1. Every individual's favorite subject is themselves, so ask questions and let others tell you about them. 2. Listen empathetically to the answers to learn what they value. 3. Find mutual benefit by framing responses that show how your features can benefit them based on their needs. While seemingly counter-intuitive, by framing the conversation on their needs, as opposed to one’s own, leaving an impression is more likely.

The best way to highlight your own qualities and skills is through showcasing your clients. Rather than talk about yourself, talk about them. What have they achieved? What successes have they had? What challenges have they overcome? All through working with you, of course. It's called "the humble brag" and is a way you can talk about your own services, without it seeming as though you are. You're giving the spotlight to someone else, and telling their story, but it's still down to the help you've provided for them.

Do a mild background research before you intentionally network with someone -- so that you will know what can be connected from your field of work to their field of work. Be a good listener by actively listening to their stories then seamlessly connect it to your story, and try to find potential collaboration that can be developed.
