If you love classic stirred cocktails, a cocktail mixing glass will quickly become your best friend. Instead of using a cocktail shaker — which creates a more diluted, often cloudy cocktail — stirring a drink gets it cold but preserves its clarity and keeps its alcohol volume higher. When not in use, the right mixing glass also looks incredibly stylish on an outdoor bar cart.

The best cocktail mixing glasses are typically made of glass or crystal but can also be made of metal in a similar silhouette. They should be heavier on the bottom so they don’t tip over and should be easy to handle and clean. We interviewed mixologists to get their picks on the best cocktail mixing glasses, considering their construction, capacity, and overall performance.

Pros
  • This stylish mixing glass comes at a very wallet-friendly price and does a great job for recreational mixologists. It’s also dishwasher safe.

Cons
  • It’s smaller and lighter than those used in professional settings.

This super affordable mixing glass from Crate & Barrel is styled after classic cut crystal and is part of the brand’s Hatch bar collection. While this vessel is slightly smaller and lighter in weight than a standard mixing glass, it’s a great choice for someone who doesn’t have a lot of space on their bar cart or who doesn’t mind crafting one cocktail at a time. Unlike crystal versions of this glass, this model is dishwasher-safe and does a fantastic job for the price.

Pros
  • This European crystal mixing glass combined with a handmade pewter base makes an elegant gift.

Cons
  • Pewter can tarnish slowly over time if not properly handled and washed.

This mixing glass by Match is a gorgeous, gift-worthy investment piece that is part of a larger barware collection, all handmade in Italy. Designed to hold 24 ounces, it's enough to mix up to three cocktails at once, perfectly sized if you like to entertain. This heirloom quality glass is crafted from lead-free European crystal and pewter, adding a sophisticated luster to your bar or cocktail cart. To clean, simply wash the vessel by hand — pewter is much easier to maintain than silver since it tarnishes very slowly and requires only cleaning with warm water and mild dish soap.

Pros
  • Classically styled like cut crystal, this mixing glass is sturdy enough to go in the dishwasher.

Cons
  • It may discolor or cloud over time, and need replacement every few years.

This Yarai mixing glass by Cocktail Kingdom was named by our expert mixologist, Anthony “The Professor” Baker, as his personal favorite. A classically styled vessel with the look of cut crystal, it’s a popular choice among professionals. Constructed of glass, it holds up to 500 milliliters (around 19 ounces), which translates to one or two drinks.

“This mixing glass is thick and very durable, and will last you a while so long as you don’t drop it or overheat it in the dishwasher,” says Baker. “But note, after a while discoloration will occur, so you will probably need to replace this mixing glass every three to four years.”

This model by Mofado has all the elements of a great cocktail mixing glass. Made of ultra-clear, lead-free crystal, it has a thick, weighted bottom to keep it stable as you mix drinks. It also boasts a seamless design that makes it extra sturdy and unlikely to crack (unless it gets dropped). It holds up to 18.5 ounces of 550 milliliters of liquid and ice — that is about one or two cocktails — and has an easy-to-use pour spout that ensures every last drop gets into your serving glass.

Riedel is best known for their extensive line of drink-specific stemware, including Nick and Nora glasses, classic coupes, and wine glasses, so it’s not surprising that they also make a great cocktail mixing glass. This beautiful mixing glass is made from crystal but is sturdy enough to withstand being run through the dishwasher for easy cleaning. It holds almost 23 ounces, enough to create up to two drinks at the same time.

With a heavy-weighted bottom, it offers excellent stability and the diameter of the glass works well to securely hold a strainer across the top. For those who want a splurge-worthy piece meant to last, this cocktail mixing glass from Riedel is an impeccable choice.

Material: Crystal | Capacity: 22.9 ounces | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • This set gives you all the essential tools you’ll need to make your favorite stirred drinks.

Sometimes a ready-made kit is the most cost-effective way to pick up essential barware pieces. This well-curated set from Regal and Co. includes a 580-milliliter crystal mixing glass with a weighted bottom, just large enough to make up to three drinks at once. The set also consists of a Japanese-style jigger, Hawthorn strainer, bar spoon, and polishing cloth — all the tools you need to mix up a classic Negroni or Manhattan.

The mixing glass, strainer, jigger, and spoon are all dishwasher-safe but can also be easily washed by hand. Serious cocktail enthusiasts may prefer to upgrade to a professional-grade vessel instead, but for novices, it’s a great starter set.

Material: Crystal | Capacity: 19.6 ounces | Dishwasher-safe: Yes

Pros
  • This super durable mixing glass won’t stain or crack if dropped.

Cons
  • It’s not weighted on the bottom, so it’s more likely to tip over.

Mixing glasses are typically made from crystal and glass, but if durability is a major concern, this mixing tin is a winning option. Made from stainless steel, its double-walled construction helps to keep drinks as cold as possible before serving. The high-shine exterior is modeled after the geometric design of cut glass crystal glassware, but it won’t crack or shatter if accidentally hit or dropped, making it a nice option for those who like to mix cocktails often.

It holds up to 550 milliliters — around two cocktails at once — and pours easily from the handy pouring spout into a stackable glass. The stainless walls won’t stain or discolor and can be easily cleaned by running it through the dishwasher.

Factors to Consider

Intended Use

When thinking about buying a cocktail mixing glass, consider how often you’ll be using it. In a high-volume situation — like a bar or party setting — you’ll want to be sure your chosen vessel is durable and large enough to handle multiple cocktails at once. For those who enjoy the occasional cocktail hour at home, you can get away with using more delicate or smaller-sized mixing glasses.

Material and Construction

Most cocktail mixing glasses are made from glass or crystal, which — while beautiful on a bar cart — should be handled with care. These types of glasses should have a thicker bottom for stability and should ideally be seamless so there’s less of a chance of cracking. If durability is an issue, you can opt for a metal cocktail mixing tin instead. These can stand up to accidental drops and dings, while also chilling down drinks faster than glass versions.

Cleaning

Since they’re so simply designed, most cocktail mixing glasses are easy to wash by hand and should be hand-washed to preserve their luster. But if being able to throw your glass into the dishwasher is important to you, you’ll want to ensure the manufacturer has declared it dishwasher-safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What cocktails do you need a mixing glass for?

“I typically use a mixing glass for spirit-forward cocktails such as the Old-fashioned, Manhattan, the Negroni,” says Baker. “The idea is to stir the cocktail rather than shaking it which would cause the drink to be much more diluted than necessary due to its high ABV.”

  • Can I muddle ingredients in a cocktail mixing glass?

“Yes, you may muddle into a mixing glass, with the sugar cube being the most commonly muddled item in them,” says Baker. But if your cocktail mixing glass is too tall or too unstable to comfortably muddle, you don’t have to. Baker notes that contemporary mixologists often turn to other options:  syrups, bitters, and infused spirits are more efficient ways of adding creative flavors to cocktails.

  • Can mixing glasses be used for hot liquids?

In general, no — most mixing glasses are not tempered to handle hot liquids. “When mixologists are whipping up hot cocktails, such as the Hot Toddy or Irish Coffee, we mix directly into the glass that the patron will be drinking from, which is already tempered to handle such heat,” says Baker.

  • How do I best clean a cocktail mixing glass?

Since mixing glasses tend to be pretty simple in design, it’s fairly easy to wash them by hand, as you would with cocktail glasses for drinking. Baker recommends avoiding the dishwasher as high temperatures during the wash or dry cycle could potentially damage the mixing glass. Of course, always consult the manufacturer’s care instructions.
