Labour’s £8.3 billion GB Energy plan Keir Starmer recently announced that GB Energy, a state-owned renewable energy company, and one of Labour's flagship policies, will use the country's surrounding seabed to house offshore wind farms 💨 The Crown Estate has pledged an investment of £3.3bn in small-scale energy projects, and £5bn to help larger projects gather wind in their sails. The GB Energy plan will (hopefully) result in £60bn of private investment into the country AND cheaper energy bills. Artificial Intelligence impact? GB Energy is implementing the LOAF Gen AI24 framework, which will leverage AI and machine learning algorithms to assist in the planning and execution of Britain's energy transition. The framework utilises its open-source Large Language Model to analyse immense amounts of data on emerging technologies, which then allows for detailed scenario simulation and prediction of potential 'holes' in Labour's ambitious energy plan. Let's hope Starmer and his GB Energy plan will deliver on their promise of 100% clean power by 2030 and reduce our soaring energy bills. #climatech #GBEnergy #ai #LOAFGenAI24

In our UK Energy Transition Outlook 2024 report, we forecast that offshore wind capacity will significantly increase from around 14 GW today to 90 GW in 2050 (including 10 GW of off-grid capacity for hydrogen production). This will increasingly include floating offshore wind facilities, which will be 24% of total offshore wind capacity by 2050. Greencoat Renewables PLC has released its financial results for the six months ending 30 June 2024, showing a power generation increase of over 400 gigawatt hours (GWh) during a period of low wind resources, reaching 1927GWh in 2024 compared to 1489GWh in the same period of 2023.   The Irish company also reported net cash generation of €113.6 million for 2024, down from €125.5 million in 2023. 📢New Government report highlights supply chain and skills shortages that could jeopardise UK offshore wind development 📢 This Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) report addresses the critical supply chain and skills shortages that could harm the UK's 2030 50 GW offshore wind power generation goal. Below are some of the report's key observations about the renewable energy skills shortage: "Shortages are particularly acute for design and commissioning engineers, project managers, and installation technicians. There is intense national and international competition for new and experienced hires with these skillsets." "From engineering and design professionals to the commissioning and installation workforce, personnel shortages may limit the UK’s ability to meet the BESS deployment targets."  "A more detailed, holistic skills assessment examining the skills pipeline and demand across these sectors would help inform how secondary and higher education and employers should respond." In addition to the points above, the report also references The OWIC’s Offshore Wind Skills Intelligence Report and the National Grid’s Building the Net Zero Energy Workforce, which state that: - The UK offshore wind workforce must increase from 32,000+ to 104,000+ by 2030 to achieve the 50 GW target. - 260,000 new roles must be filled by 2050 to meet growth targets and projected demand. As the report reveals, despite the UK's well-established engineering institutions and increased numbers of students and applicants, significant shortages of skilled labour still need to be addressed to maintain positive momentum in the transition towards renewable energy. The Green Jobs Plan, which the government is due to publish later this year, will address these issues through various recommendations and action points for institutions, associations and offshore wind businesses to implement over the coming years. This initiative aims to ensure ethical sourcing and robust supply chains, contributing to the company’s ambitious renewable energy goals. 🔋 🔍 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 🔍 The framework supports the verification, review, and due diligence of supply chains, ensuring traceability and segregation protocols to maintain ethical sourcing practices. 🛒 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 🛒 Solar panels may be procured by Scottish Water, Scottish Water Horizons , or approved Framework suppliers. ⚡ 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 ⚡ Scottish Water Horizons aims to deliver 90GWh of new renewable energy projects across the estate, incorporating both established and innovative technologies. 🏗️ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 🏗️ Installations will range from small-scale (25-50kW) to large projects (up to 5MW), with occasional exceptions exceeding 5MW. 📅 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘀 📅 An existing framework with four suppliers, in place since 2021, has been paused due to concerns over forced labor in supply chains, particularly related to raw materials sourced from Xinjiang. 📝 𝗢𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 📝 Scottish Water's Procurement and Supply Chain (PSC) function continues to seek ethically clean supply chains while monitoring industry and legislative developments. 📈 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 📈 The DPS is open for applications until 2032, with no cap on the number of suppliers who can join.
