Launched in December 2023, the SSI seeks to cultivate responsible, transparent, and sustainable solar value chains. Committing organisations aim to uphold high standards of transparency, social responsibility, and governance, striving to mitigate the impact of raw material extraction, conserve water, reduce carbon emissions, and eradicate human rights abuses like forced labor from global supply chains. “This is about doing what’s right – right for workers, right for the environment, right for the country and right for the industry. As Australia transitions to clean energy, we need to ensure that the renewables industry is sustainable. That means making the most of the components we create, reusing them as much as possible, and recycling as much as we can when projects reach their end-of-life phase. Solar panels, for example, are generally designed to have a 30-year lifespan, but the average operational time is 15 years, often because newer systems are released and older panels are replaced too quickly. Many of the panels that are replaced go to waste. It’s an area that needs improvement and we should be striving to ensure our economies are as circular as possible. It’s clean, it’s green and it can stimulate more employment The Climate Action Network Australia and the Australia Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) have released a report titled "Towards Renewable Energy Superpower," which outlines the potential employment and economic benefits of establishing a domestic solar panel manufacturing industry in Australia. The report suggests that developing a comprehensive national solar panel supply chain, encompassing manufacturing, services, and recycling, could generate up to 60,000 new jobs. Although Australia is already engaged in several key clean energy technology sectors such as solar, wind, critical minerals, battery energy storage, and electric vehicles (EVs), its involvement is currently limited, often restricted to a few companies. The report emphasises the importance of government action to pinpoint critical investment areas and formulate policies that position Australia as a recognized leader in the global renewable energy market. Voicing Sustainable Wales support and scaling up climate action together.   PARC SOLAR CAENEWYDD, Gowerton, Swansea   To encourage the introduction of renewable energy, recognising the urgency in society to decarbonise, Sustainable Wales (SW) is posting a brief outline of its support for Parc Solar Caenewydd, to interested parties. Our aim is to encourage you to join SW in this initiative and register your support for this renewable energy scheme. (Until 25th April). It has no public funding.   Sustainable Wales is supporting this project. From our point of view, if renewable energy applications respond to local issues of biodiversity, landscape and the (legally required) 10% of shared ownership for the local community and its economy, we believe it is important that they are welcomed and encouraged.   No planning application is ever perfect, but if on balance this project reduces climate emissions, increases biodiversity, responds to energy security, and helps the local economy, it should be supported.
