The Social Report is the result of a series of structured dialogue sessions, organised by British American Tobacco in The Netherlands in 2007/2008, with Dutch stakeholder groups, such as trade partners, the public health community, governmental bodies, local community stakeholders and BAT's employees. These stakeholders were given the opportunity to express their opinions and expectations of British American Tobacco as a tobacco company. The report contains an overview of the stakeholders expectations, our responses to those expectations and our commitments to address those issues that matter most to stakeholders, such as harm reduction, the impact of the horeca ban on smoking, butt littering and the prevention of illicit trade.

The social reporting process reflects BAT's strategy to drive recognition as a responsible tobacco company, thus improving long term business sustainability. Through the constructive engagement with stakeholders BAT aims to demonstrate that the company is meeting its commercial objectives in a transparent manner, consistent with reasonable public expectations for a responsible tobacco company.
