If you work in tech policy, you may remember the Online Safety Act passed in 2023 after many years in gestation. Regulator Ofcom is consulting on legally binding codes of practice and other duties on platforms. The Telegraph reports that ministers' review of the Act, promised in light of awful events around the UK in the past few weeks, will include a re-introduction of the 'Legal but harmful' provisions which the last government dropped from the legislation. This would be a significant development, you can read more below (paywall) UPDATE: this, of course, isn't yet confirmed but, per Playbook this morning, a government official says: “That’s the work that we will move to now that the immediate moment has passed.” #tech #onlinesafety #policy
