If you work in tech policy, you may remember the Online Safety Act passed in 2023 after many years in gestation. Regulator Ofcom is consulting on legally binding codes of practice and other duties on platforms. The Telegraph reports that ministers' review of the Act, promised in light of awful events around the UK in the past few weeks, will include a re-introduction of the 'Legal but harmful' provisions which the last government dropped from the legislation. This would be a significant development, you can read more below (paywall) UPDATE: this, of course, isn't yet confirmed but, per Playbook this morning, a government official says: “That’s the work that we will move to now that the immediate moment has passed.” #tech #onlinesafety #policy

Why should you care about anti-trans legislation as an organization or a business? What if I told you legislators potentially wasted 41,000 hours on anti-trans legislation. Let's say it takes 40 hours to write, lobby and pass a bill (this is my estimation). There were 1,126 anti-trans bills introduced in 2023 and 2024.* That's 45,040 legislative hours spent on these bills (using my estimation). Of those bills, 98 passed (but many of those that passed are/have been challenged legally). That means YOUR (Republican) legislators wasted approximately 41,120 hours on legislation that was discriminatory or unconstitutional. 41,120 hours that could have been spent on incentives to stop brain drain, employment laws, technology policies (hey, AI), digital infrastructure and more. Do you want to work in a state that budgets its legislative time with absolutely no regard to scope creep? As the Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill is debated at the House of Commons, techUK members remain concerned about its potential impacts on user trust and the safety of the internet, as well as on the competitiveness of the UK economy. We are of the view that the proposed changes will: • Hinder technological advancements aimed at improving consumer privacy, integrity and security, and, if emulated by other countries, could negatively impact UK businesses investing overseas; • Place private companies in an untenable position of facing an irreconcilable conflict of laws within an increasingly complex regulatory environment; • Risk making the UK less attractive for investment. techUK urges the House of Commons to address these concerns as soon as possible, to ensure that the updated regime is transparent, proportionate, and contains a robust accountability mechanism that is appropriate for a Bill with such significant impacts.
