The programme offers business support, executive education, a 2-day leadership retreat, scaling skills training sessions and a cohort of peers. I LOVE our community at Creatives for Climate Collective - and it's insane how fast scaling we are! We're now over 5,300+ on our closed collaboration Hub, with events all across the world, and it's truly really incredible! I also notice that as we grow - I start to hide 😱 as although 99.9% of folks really GET our mission and bring to life a culture of collective action - there is 0.1% who see me, and this work, as a "service." I am not public infrastructure 😅 🫠 What I've experienced is that building a public movement, comes with a lot of expectations and demands from the public (rightly so!) but this can also feel pretty extractive at times when I'm struggling to sustain my team and the valuable work we are doing to transition mindsets, skill-sets, services and client portfolios away from driving pollution and towards scaling solutions. Last night we hosted the most amazing event, truly amazing and we'll share more on that soon - but at one moment someone tracked me down to give me some "direct feedback" on their user experience of the Hub. In person. In a crowd. Honestly if I knew I was taking on movement building, capacity building, industry transformation, AND the headaches of running a highly sophisticated online "social media" tech platform I might not have chewed all at once. The truth is we are under-resourced when it comes to our tech support capacity, and these are just some of the operational pains of running an NGO where funding is scarce and we lack the resources to operate, well, like a business. 🚨 Frustrated, but not surprised! The latest from The Guardian (read it here: https://lnkd.in/eBW9Pq-p) reveals a harsh reality: if you’re a woman leading health tech, good luck getting funded. This isn’t new. It’s just another hurdle in the constant battle for women’s health equity. Dr Fiona Pathiraja-Møller, and others have drawn attention to this before, and yet we’re still here—fighting for the funding and attention that should already be flowing toward women’s health. 📢 Collaborator call-out! 📢 This week saw the launch of a new report from Unbound Philanthropy on the complex intersection of climate and migration in the UK context. I'm appreciating the leadership of Alice Sachrajda and Marchu Belete to bring this topic into focus, not least by being honest about the uncertainty of what we're even trying to achieve and how to tell the story. Its re-invigorated my passion (rooted in many years of partnership with UNHCR in a global context) for: - sitting with complexity at the climate-migration nexus - understanding migration as a natural adaptation strategy - defending the right to move (or to stay) - engaging citizens / communities in building welcoming narratives - modelling prototypes and demonstrating new ways of living together on a warming planet. I really think it might be time for me to take some active steps around this work - I've been doing my research and collecting my thoughts (even curating my own personal Miro Board on the topic) for months, building on many years working in contexts of migration and displacement. For a few years now, I've really believed this is THE work of the coming decades. So now its time to talk! More people spending time in nature ➡️ more climate action, right? 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲. We’ve been working with coalition of partners in Manchester, to help make nature more accessible for everyone in the city and capture the stories and characteristics of community nature projects that make them thrive. Thanks to the support of the Wates Family Enterprise Trust we’ve: 🤝 Been working with communities to connect people & nature 🪴 Supported community-led initiatives to bring nature back to shared spaces 🔎 Conducted research to better understand the links between nature and climate action On that last point: it seems it's not just nature that makes a difference, but there is a mechanism for change there. It works something like this: • Enable 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: that’s what makes people turn up • Create a 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆: that’s what makes people come back • Make people feel 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿: it’s what makes change feel positive and worthwhile Curious? There’s this UK Government article about “User research in government” titled: “Why we care more about effectiveness than efficiency or satisfaction”. https://lnkd.in/eJXAgW2E I googled the difference between effectiveness and efficiency and Britannica gave this: "The words effective and efficient both mean "capable of producing a result," but there is an important difference. Effective means "producing a result that is wanted". Efficient means "capable of producing desired results without wasting materials, time, or energy". What approach would you employ when working on your own projects?

M&M leave .. what do you think about it? I like the sentiment expressed in this article by Dr Sally King that : "The healthy female body is positioned as the problem rather than inadequate work environments ...& toxic cultures that stigmatize periods." i.e when you send women home, the workplace doesn't have to change. My view is that M&M leave also plays into a shifting of responsibility. If someone is so debilitated by menstrual or menopausal symptoms that they can't work, that represents a failure in women's health primary health care system. I don't think it's a workplace's responsibility to pay the price for that neglect, but I'm impressed by the generosity of those workplaces that do so, through offering additional paid leave. For the minority of people who experience severe menstrual or menopausal symptoms, I can see that some extra leave could be a game changer in enabling them to keep their jobs. #menopause #menopauseintheworkplace #menopauseatwork #genderequity. #employeewellbeing

I'm looking forward to heading to my home county of Yorkshire tomorrow for UKREiiF 2024 as part of the London Communications Agency contingent. Along with my LCA colleagues, we'll be bouncing in to town, speaking at events, hosting some of our own events, and supporting our clients at this really crucial couple of days in the built environment industry's calendar. This will be my first UKREiiF - my expectations are that it'll be a bit like a party conference (and I've been to a fair few of those over the years!) but with fewer politicians, and many more representatives from the property world! But a concentrated gathering of the like-minded in one place for a few days will be reassuringly familiar to me, and to many others no doubt, who've ploughed the circuit of Brighton, Blackpool, Manchester and Birmingham for Labour and Tory conferences over the years. A big topic of discussion in the panel events, the cafes and bars will be the looming General Election and what this will mean for the real estate world. The phrase 'stay alive until 2025' is banded about a lot, and this does neatly encapsulate the flatline mood of 2024, and the hopes of an upturn in the economy early next year. By then, we'll be past the General Election - if the polls are right, it could be Keir Starmer at the head of a Labour Government with a substantial majority. Labour has talked a lot about getting Britain building - not just homes, but infrastructure too. They're certainly talking the talk, but we're still waiting for details. We may well hear from some of the key players this week in Leeds. Yet with last week's unveiling of Labour's 6 pledges, housing, development and construction was conspicuous by their absence. Is the party backsliding on getting Britain building? Many will be looking for reassurance. Here at the London Communications Agency, as we head towards our 25th birthday, we're expanding fast - with clients beyond our traditional base, and also beyond the M25. We work across strategic communications, campaigning, public affairs, consumer, design and insight, and with some clients we now provide all of these services, reflecting the confidence many have in our in-house expertise and creativity. We are proud of our clients & represent some of the biggest and most exciting projects - from Earls Court, to King's Cross, to Greenwich Peninsula, to Westfield, to The Crown Estate. Our knowledge of London - the people & organisations that make it work, in local councils & at City Hall in Sadiq Khan's team - is our lifeblood, and we're building on this all the time as we increasingly work beyond the city's boundaries. This knowledge is more crucial than ever this year, with the General Election just a matter of months away. We know that political change introduces uncertainty for our clients, and it is why we're trusted to provide advice to help guide them through this coming period of change. 100 funders were asked about their attitudes to funding campaigners + activists in this new Social Change Lab research report. It found that while funders believe in campaigning as a tool for change (good!), there are practical + psychological blocks to their giving (so stuff to address...) Some suggestions for helping funders support campaigning are cited. Whilst they aren't rocket science, it's an important reminder of what we might not be doing effectively at the moment. - Make it easier to fund campaigners. Get to know intermediary organisations who can help you make relevant connections. - Improve comms. Have a clear plan of what you can win. Consider using fairness and justice as framing. - See evidence as your friend (am a particular fan of this one). Look at past or similar campaigns that were successful and consider their impact.
