Nothing changes the trajectory of a life more powerfully than literacy.

In the areas in which we work, some 11-year-olds are as many as 13 months behind their peers. This gap opens early: by the age of seven there is a 17% attainment gap between children eligible for free school meals and their more advantaged counterparts. In the areas in which we work, some 11-year-olds are as many as 13 months behind their peers. This gap opens early: by the age of seven there is a 17% attainment gap between children eligible for free school meals and their more advantaged counterparts. This can impact their overall educational attainment and these children often never catch up thereby reducing their total life chances.

Simple innovations can make a big difference. Chapter One has reduced the opportunity cost for both individuals and their companies to volunteer each week. Our flagship online reading programme pairs disadvantaged, struggling 6 year old readers with reading support volunteers who are working professionals. The volunteer ask - just 30 minutes a week - is very flexible and focused. It is the perfect opportunity for those who want to make a direct impact but find it hard to leave busy offices. More to the point, the National Literacy Trust amongst others recognise the great impact this type of reading enrichment programme can make.

Our current 132+ UK partners, who contribute volunteers and funding to support the programme, include businesses such as KPMG, Google, Janus Henderson Investors, Deloitte, Jacobs, Sodexo, Ashurst LLP, Rothschild & Co and Salesforce. This year (23-24) we are supporting over 3000 children in 10 areas of the UK.

Please reach out to [email protected] if you or your organisation wants to give children reading support at the time they need it most. Your involvement makes all the difference.
