Useful World Economic Forum report with cases on the use of AI in education, including a case study on AI and youth entrepreneurship. Defining the guardrails for AI and Education is evolving but this is another useful contribution.
AI can provide information and assist with learning, but the role of teachers extends far beyond mere knowledge delivery. Teachers engage in many activities that are difficult for AI to replicate fully, including:
1. Personalized Attention: Teachers can identify and respond to individual students' needs, learning styles, and emotional states.
2. Emotional Support and Mentorship: They provide encouragement, motivation, and support, fostering a positive learning environment and building student confidence.
3. Classroom Management: Teachers maintain order, manage classroom dynamics, and address behavioral issues.
4. Adaptability and Creativity: They adapt their teaching methods to suit the class's needs, often creatively presenting material in ways that resonate with students.
5. Critical Thinking and Discussion Facilitation: Teachers encourage critical thinking, lead discussions, and help students develop problem-solving skills.
6. Assessment and Feedback: They assess student progress through various methods and provide tailored feedback to help students improve.
7. Role Modeling: Teachers serve as role models, demonstrating values such as responsibility, integrity, and perseverance.
While AI can assist in educational processes, it lacks the human touch necessary for these crucial aspects of teaching.
Thoughtful words from David Edwards on the role of teachers in the era of AI. I heard David speak at the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize several years ago and even there (pre AI) he summed up the main point.
Paraphrasing ... if you believe that education is just the transfer of content knowledge then yes tech will replace the teacher. But if you consider the teacher as the pedagogical, SEL, youth development, growth and development expert then no tech cant do that.
Id also add to this discussion that the role of leaders during the AI era is also key. How do they adjust/lead during this new disruptor to our systems?
Thinking about the new definition of education and training is fundamental, since IA is impacting how we perceive knowledge and, most importantly, how knowledge is shared and made accessible to all.
We will see. AI never takes time off. Has PhD level knowledge on multiple subjects. Never asks for a raise. Will never have an inappropriate relationship with a student. Just a matter of time until we turn over teaching and maybe thinking to AI. AI in theory has every book written downloaded. It’s only issue is consolidating and sharing difficult information in an easy to understand format.
Human touch is always important in building social-emotional relationships. This personal connection is crucial for fostering genuine bonds and understanding. Because of this, AI will never be able to replicate the unique feeling we get from teachers in the classroom. The presence, empathy, and direct interaction that human teachers provide are irreplaceable.

The Unsung Hero of the Information Age: Why Teachers Will ALWAYS Be Irreplaceable
Here's a mind-bender for you: AI can dish out knowledge like a never-ending trivia machine. Impressive, right? But knowledge is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to learning.
David Edwards, union leader at Education International, hits the nail on the head: AI can't replicate the magic of a truly great teacher. Teachers are the spark igniting curiosity, the cheerleader celebrating breakthroughs, and the lighthouse guiding students through stormy concepts. They nurture critical thinking, build confidence, and foster a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.
So, let's celebrate the irreplaceable role of teachers! They're the backbone of our education systems, and they deserve all the support we can give them.
