‘commsplanation’: duff advice from the non comms colleague. Have you ever been commsplained? It’s where someone who is less qualified than you, or less experienced, explains something to you. They get hold of the tiniest amount of knowledge, and suddenly they’re giving you opinions so misinformed, so utterly clueless that you want to boot them up the butt. Take a deep breath comms friends. It’s called Dunning-Kruger effect, and unfortunately it’s human nature. In a nutshell, this phenomenon describes how we are all inclined to think we know more than we actually do about topics we dabble in. We humans often get hold of some information – and we know so little that we don’t know what we don’t know. So we think we have a better grasp of the subject than we actually do. It’s kind of the opposite of imposter syndrome. Knowing why your colleagues do it doesn’t make it less irritating when they come up with hare-brained suggestions about TikTok, or excellent advice about using social media to do more storytelling (duh, like I’d never thought of that!) We bring SO much value and many people just don’t get it! For instance, those of us who manage social media often do the work of ten people. Anyway, try not to take a commsplanation personally. See it as a sign you’re a true expert! We probably all do it accidentally - when we get excited about something we heard on a podcast, or when we spout our political opinions on policy areas we reckon we could handle better than our government does for example. None of us can be experts in everything. So let’s all try to be compassionate and let down these commsplaining clowns down, respectfully and kindly. Then pat yourself on the back, because you’re skilled AND empathetic!

I know a lot of my connections have asked about the final guide in the CIPR EDI essentials series. Thrilled (and mostly relieved tbh 😂 ) to be able to say it's published today. All of them have been important to me, but this one probably the most. Disability allies, advocates and accomplices (if this is a new term to you read the guide to find out what it means!) are so important in helping bring about change. Influencing your sphere of power and working alongside disabled people to improve inclusion, equity and accessibility is powerful. As much as I'm please to see this guide out in the wild and complete the series, I'm still a little sad that we didn't get to include real life stories and examples in here. We explain why in the guide, which is another good reason to download it. Another is that it's the final day of Disability Pride Month and getting some CPD points whilst learning how to be a better ally to disabled people seems like a good thing? #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityInclusion #PublicRelations

It absolutely makes my day to hear about the impact we’re having - for individual fundraisers and the sector as a whole 😍 We have 2 webinars left in our yearend series - next up is digital strategy for DAF giving on Tuesday (12/10) with Paul St Onge from Doing Good Digital ⭐️ One of my big goals for 2024 was to build an educational foundation on DAFs for nonprofits 👷🏻‍♂️ When I came into my role at Chariot, it was clear that not only did the sector need technology that connected DAF giving with digital fundraising 🔗 We also had no shared best practices on DAF fundraising as a whole 🕳️ From data, to stewardship, to marketing, to compliance - we had no standards and so many missed opportunities 😔 So we took on 4 key elements that no one was providing to the sector - while making everything free and open to the public: 1️⃣ Original DAF Research No one had ever analyzed nonprofits own data on DAF fundraising. How can we improve something if we don’t know our starting point? 🚦 We’ve had over 1,000 direct downloads of the DAF Fundraising Report and dozens of citations in other media - thank you Karin Kirchoff & K2D for the amazing partnership here! 🙌🏼 2️⃣ Interactive DAF education I’m in my happy place getting to teach - between conferences, podcasts and webinars that happened over 100 times! 🤩 I learn so much hearing questions and feedback from folks - helping us continually iterate, improve and expand our resources 🔄 3️⃣ Dedicated DAF Campaigns So many people wanted to activate around DAFs… but didn’t have a clear way to do it alone 🤔 We’ve now officially added a new day to the fundraising calendar - DAF Day 2025 is on October 9th 🗓️ 4️⃣ Actionable DAF Resources This started with our marketing toolkit for DAF day, but has expanded in Q4 to include compliance guidelines (DAF Gift Acceptance Policy template) and a full directory of DAF provider names 🏆 These downloads are on top of our blog which is chock full of guides and to do lists for all the key elements of DAF fundraising ✅ We’ve been busy! And couldn’t do it without 1,000s of peoples participation and collaboration 🫂 What was most useful to you? 🌿🌿 Is upskilling the key to going green and doing good?🌿🌿Companies can approach upskilling from any number of angles (or multiple): As a benefit like a fitness reimbursement, as a tool to increase employee retention, as a means for boosting good will and morale, as a strategy for developing the next generation of managers, or, according to an article in FE news, as a key component of an organization's corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. Through CSR, companies create programs to give back to local communities through philanthropy, economic development, and environmental sustainability initiatives. The author suggests that upskilling can advance CSR by educating young people about the principles and strategies of environmental, social, economic, and ethical responsibility.
