An award-winning internal communications agency based in the Midlands.
About us
We are an industry-leading internal communications agency with a values-led, partner-based business model. 44 aims to be a new kind of creative communications company but in actual fact our core offering is founded on very simple and very traditional ideas. Just two ideas in fact: Great personal service and keeping the promises we make. The new, and more innovative part of 44, is that we set out from the start to be a true values-driven enterprise and one that operates a scalable partner-based business model. The name 44 comes from the initial number of partners we agreed alliance terms with. This modern collaborative model enables us to tailor specialist teams dedicated to the needs of our clients' projects. First, we assess the requirements of each client project. Then, we bring together the right creative specialists with the right skills and enthusiasm to deliver the best possible solution.

In a digital age, print has a quality that stands out. And for moments of historic note, it can be a brilliant way of marking significant change. We were thrilled to work with Uniper on the editorial production for the history of the Ratcliffe Power Station as part of its closure. So, it was exciting when the physical copies of the book landed in our office this week. Flicking through the pages of employee stories and photography, you really understand both the technological and emotional story. A great project delivered by Jo Williams, Tylah Mofford, Jonathan Hooke and Simons Henning. #print #editorial #employee #internalcommunications #ic #internalcomms

How can you keep your organisational battery well charged?
Fascinating morning planning for 2025 with one of our clients. Lots of things to think about for the year ahead, including an important conversation about organisational resilience. A lot of companies are facing significant commercial and operational challenges in 2025. During times of high stress, individual and organisational resilience becomes critically important. This was a big topic of discussion. I drew an analogy between a company's resilience in the face of challenge and a battery. It's a concept that comes from endurance sport - W', or W Prime, is a cycling metric that's often compared to a battery to help explain how much energy you can use above your critical power (CP). Activity and stress drains the battery. You can top up the battery, but the more strain you experience, the faster it drains. As Nick Busca explains: "Much like a battery, W’ can be recharged by dropping back below critical power, but recharging is very slow because, in the case of a surge in a race, you’re still using the battery albeit at a slightly lesser rate. It may take 20 minutes to recover half of what you’ve spent. Think of trying to recharge your smartphone while streaming a hi-res music video through your phone’s speaker on max volume." Just to make the point clear. It takes a lot longer to charge the battery than it does to drain it. Keeping available energy high in moments of high effort means taking action to replenish the battery at a higher rate. In sports terms that might mean taking on an energy gel or drink. In organisational terms it means those things that energise and motivate colleagues. And at times of organisational stress, these are often the activities that get cut or reduced first. To my mind, these are the times when you need these energising moments more than ever, for example: - Autonomy and agency - Being listened to - Moments to celebrate - Socialising and networking - Recognition and reward - Leadership presence - ESG activities - Volunteering or community engagement Finding ways to charge the battery during organisational stress is critical for keeping your business able to respond to continued challenges. You will know what works for you and your people, but in the midst of difficulties, make time to prioritise charging the battery and don't just dismiss it as a nice to have only to be used when times are good! Get this wrong and you will find your people running out of steam very quickly. #internalcommunications #ic #engagement #strategy #change #culture #leadership Photo by Possessed Photography on Unsplash

What's the connection between first aid and communications?
I attended a first aid course over the weekend, which was very interesting, useful and something everyone should do if you get the chance.* One of the things we spent time discussing was the Primary and Secondary Survey. The Primary Survey is your immediate assessment of a situation that allows you to quickly get to grips with what's going on and how to act in the short-term. The DR ABC - Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation. The Secondary Survey is a more systematic assessment of the condition of the patient to understand if there are other injuries or issues that need to be addressed once the primary issues are managed. I think there is a lesson here for comms planning and response. - How often do we come at a challenge with a primary response... and then that's it? - Do you make time to look beyond the initial issue and review other issues that may need attention? - Once the immediate need is managed, do you sit back and relax, or ask what else is potentially going on here that may need attention, or may be a bigger issue to deal with? I like the idea of applying a primary and secondary survey approach to communications. Next time you are asked to respond to a communications challenge, try the following: - Primary Survey - what needs to happen right now to meet the requirement or manage the situation - Secondary Survey - what else might be going on here that we need to manage in the short or medium term It's easy to feel like once the immediate response is delivered, you can move on. Thinking about Primary and then Secondary can help us identify underlying issues that are probably just as important or impactful. #internalcomms #IC #communications #strategy #engagement #employee *One stat the tutor gave us was that the UK has a very low survival rate from heart attacks. One reason is that the % of people who are trained or feel confident about responding to a heart attack is very low compared to similar countries. The UK is about 30%, whilst Germany, for example, is closer to 80%. Apparently, CPR is routinely taught in many schools, so the number of trained individuals in the community is significantly higher. Something for the UK to consider! Photo by Mathurin NAPOLY / matnapo on Unsplash
