I confess to being one of the 2 in 3 shoppers who won't buy products confined in locked display cases. Last week, I walked into my local CVS in search for some Laundry Detergent. Upon seeing that all of the detergents for sale there were hoarded away in a locked display case, I walked right on out without making a purchase. It's become an all too common experience at Drugstore Chains including CVS, Duane Reade, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. More & more everyday essential items stocked in these chain stores including Toothpaste, Deodorant, Laundry Detergent, etc. are being locked up. You need to press a button (often repeatedly) to activate a PA / voiceover message that summons a staff member (likely all the way on the opposite side of the store) to come "assist" you in unlocking the cabinet. When the staff member (finally, if ever) arrives, you need to point your finger at the item you're attempting to purchase and can pick it up only after they slide the specific door open for you. It's awkward, annoying, inconvenient, inefficient. It's made shopping for these everyday essentials at these Drugstore Chain Stores a miserable experience. These Drugstore Chains will say that locking these items away is a necessary measure to prevent theft. Don't believe them. There's no sudden massive crimewave that's necessitating this to happen now. You can draw a straight line showing that any increases in theft they're experiencing are a direct result of these stores hiring less staff in their stores. They're cutting corners and this is the resulting customer experience - it's that simple. I maintain these chains need to seriously rethink their value proposition and approach to doing business. Other than the pharmacy within, the reason for us to shop at any of these chain stores is CONVENIENCE. That convenience is being greatly diminished by this practice. I might as well simply get all of my everyday essentials delivered to me from Amazon, or shop at my local bodega, if this is the in-store shopping experience that these Drugstore Chains are providing.
