Even a club like ours, we can deliver an audience in the millions for what is on paper a very small investment! Sport is often either not thought about when choosing a method or too expensive, as it is only the the "big" clubs who can deliver the audience required! Fair Game UK's conference on Tuesday was full of thought-provoking sessions and a great opportunity to meet and mix with a wide range of football people concerned about the future governance and financial sustainability of the beautiful game. Particular highlights for me were: ⚽ Hearing from interim COO of the Independent Football Regulator Martyn Henderson talk about what his organisation will and, as importantly, won't, have powers to do once established under the Football Governance Bill going through parliament ⚽ CEO Niall Couper's impassioned exposition of the eight key issues Fair Game UK believe still need to be addressed under the Bill - with support from Fair Game's legal expert Simon Orriss of Mills & Reeve. ⚽ Presentations by Aaryaman Banerji of the Civitas Think Tank, and Dr Mark Middling and Dr Lisa J. Ferguson of Northumbria University on the need for better governance and ownership models in English professional football. ⚽ Being able to hold AFC Wimbledon's official replica of the FA Cup trophy their predecessor club won in 1988 beating Liverpool Football Club 1-0 at Wembley - a game I went to as a Liverpool fan. ⚽ Seeing the amazing ground and facilities AFC Wimbledon have built at the old Plough Lane site, developed and financed primarily by their fans as one of the very few community owned clubs in the English men's league pyramid. ⚽ Representing LCP at the conference, along with colleagues John Parnis England and Ashley Mould, and our friend and associate, EDI expert Buki Mosaku - and discussing with many conference attendees how we can use our expertise to support better football finance and governance. With yesterday's news of an election on 4 July, will the Bill come into force before then? Championing a Winning Culture in Football During my time working with Ange Postecoglou at club level, where we clinched back-to-back national titles, Ange fostered a culture of unwavering excellence. He expected commitment to a winning mentality from everyone involved—be it players, staff, board members, fans, sponsors, or support personnel. This ethos promotes a positive, forward-thinking environment that propels everyone toward an ultimate collective goal of supreme success. Yet, this drive contrasts starkly with instances in recent days at Spurs where fans preferred their team to lose to prevent a rival, like Arsenal, from winning the title. Choosing this over maintaining hopes for a Champions League spot not only undermines a winning culture but also highlights a deeper systemic issue at Spurs. A genuine passion for football should encourage striving for victory in every match, elevating the club's ambitions rather than compromising them. Ange’s reaction is very typical and understandable. EQUITY is a very important value in my life (more than EQUALITY, but that’s another post for another day). At last night’s Denver Barbarians Rugby Club training, we had a scrimmage against our “sister” rugby club, Colorado Gray Wolves. I used to coach a women's team back in New York, and many of my current players have played in co-ed touch rugby teams, but this was the first time any of us had played in a men vs women game. Specific aspects were adapted and controlled to maintain safety and security, but otherwise it was a regular scrimmage. In our sport, soft skills such as rugby IQ, spatial awareness, and communication are no less important than hard “skills” such as strength, physicality, and aggression, and under last night’s controlled conditions, the soft skills in my players were thoroughly tested. The result was a highly competitive, highly skillful, and highly equitable game of rugby where both teams adapted, learned, and had fun, three key tenets of my coaching (and leadership) philosophy. Moral of the story: “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”. This is true in sport and in business, and to achieve equity we must recognize these inequalities, make adjustments, and adapt. But here’s the rub: blindly putting our thumb on the scale to engineer equity, is the absolute antithesis of equity. #passion #purpose #performance #equity #leadership #coaching #timrhutchins

I’ve had multiple discussions with Premier League and EFL clubs recently, and one recurring topic is the need to address certain cultural aspects to better align with performance. One major issue that’s come up is the increasing use of Snus. A joint study by Loughborough University and the PFA found that: * 18% of surveyed male players and 22% of female players currently use Snus or nicotine pouches. * 42% of male and 39% of female respondents have used it at least once. * Over 50% of male users want to quit. * More than half of male users and nearly 75% of female users reported nicotine dependence. Snus, a smokeless tobacco product from Sweden, is becoming popular among footballers. Unlike smoking, Snus is placed under the upper lip, delivering nicotine without inhaling smoke. However, this trend raises serious concerns about health and performance. Impact on Sleep and Recovery Nicotine, the active compound in Snus, is a potent stimulant that can interfere with sleep, increasing the time it takes to fall asleep and reducing overall sleep duration. It disrupts sleep architecture, leading to less restorative deep sleep, which is crucial for recovery and optimal performance. Poor sleep quality can impair reaction times, decision-making, and physical endurance, leading to a decline in performance and an increased risk of injury. Dependence and Withdrawal Regular Snus use can lead to nicotine dependence, with withdrawal symptoms like irritability, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating, which further disrupts sleep and performance. This cycle can also affect a player's mental health, adding complexity to their overall well-being. Cardiovascular Concerns Nicotine increases heart rate and blood pressure, which can stress the heart, especially during intense physical activity, and contribute to long-term health risks, including cardiovascular disease. Despite these growing concerns, there seems to be a reluctance to question and address this cultural trend, even as its prevalence rises. This is an issue that needs to be tackled with the urgency it deserves to protect the health and performance of our athletes.

Firstly would like to thank our amazing teams from Industrial Thought Limited, Financial Software Ltd, and Raw Knowledge for the amazing work done to organising this even, our chairman David Pirrie for bringing the idea of the speaker, and of course to Lord Sebastian Coe for the amazing event, where we heard about his stories and his lessons learned on how to achieve success, even in something as challenging as organising the Olympic Games. Some of the lessons learned were:         - Building High Performance Teams: It’s critically important to build your team with people that bring different perspectives, that challenge you, and help you cover your own “blind spots”. o  Importance of Trust: Trust is absolutely key to success. Let each team member deliver to their fullest, trust them to do the right thing and measure them based on results and the journey/process they took to get there. o  Collaboration vs Competition: A true high performing team is about collaborating with each other and not competing. If your team is internally competing there won’t be trust which in turn kills success. o  Multidisciplinary: In high performance sports, each athlete’s “care team” is composed by experts of different fields that trust and collaborate with each other. Those different experiences are what make them successful. The same applies to business. - Communication: Over communication is key as it will allow you to have more stakeholders understanding what and why you’re doing thing and tap into them if you need help. Event if you don’t think some stakeholders can help you/ will be able to help you, over communicate any way, as if you need help, they’ll already be aligned, thus being much quicker help. - Collaboration is Key: You don’t need to be the expert in everything. Focus on your strengths and work with other people, stakeholders, and companies that enable you to get to the outcome quicker. To do this you’ll need to understand the motivations of each stakeholder and find the joint goal you’re working for.
