DAY 2/40 - THE STRUGGLE OF JOB HUNTING POST-NYSC My post-NYSC job search was a humbling experience. Fresh out of university with dreams of making a significant impact, I quickly encountered the harsh realities of the Nigerian job market. Financial constraints often kept me confined to the house, unable to afford even basic outings with friends. Armed with a degree in biotechnology, I eagerly applied to various government parastatals in Abuja, including National Biotechnology Development Agency (NADBA) (where I had been a student member for 3 years as a "student fellow" and had attended a few summit from school), the Raw Materials Research and Development Agency, National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) to mention a few. Despite my qualifications and enthusiasm, I was repeatedly rejected mostly due to my lack of “connections” and influence. The experience was disheartening, but in hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise. The rejection forced me to re-evaluate my career goals and explore alternative paths. I continued my search, undeterred by the setbacks, and eventually found a role that aligned with my interests and skills. My journey highlighted the challenges faced by many young Nigerian graduates without strong “connections.” It's a reminder that success often requires more than just academic qualifications and hard work. Building a professional network and developing transferable skills are essential for navigating the competitive job market. LESSONS LEARNED: 1. Resilience is Key: The setbacks taught me to keep pushing despite the many doors that were closed. 2. Humility in Hardship: Admitting I couldn’t afford things helped me stay grounded and focused on what mattered. 3. Delayed Success is not Failure: What felt like rejection at the time was really preparing me for the right opportunity. 4. “Networking” Matters: Unfortunately, in many systems, who you know can play a role, but don’t let that discourage you from building friendships. Just make friends, do not network. Your friends = Your network. Be intentional about this.. 5. Self-Worth is Beyond Rejection: Even though I was told I had nothing to offer, I later learned my value wasn't tied to those opinions. ENCOURAGEMENT: If you are in this situation right now, it is okay to feel discouraged, but don't stay there. Keep believing in your dreams. Every "no" brings you closer to a "yes." The struggle might feel overwhelming, but remember that rejection is not a reflection of your worth or potential. Use this time to grow, learn, and prepare for what is ahead. You are not alone in this journey, and what seems like a closed door today could open up a bigger opportunity tomorrow. The second to the last teaching session at ILS - Intentional Leaders Summit was taken by The King Maker - Favour Onuh He taught on "Living A Life of Repeat" and I wasn't around for some part of his session but the few moments I spent listening to him were priceless. Opening the floor, he asked two people to come out and gave them some multiplications to do, gradually increasing the numbers as they answered correctly, then it got to a point where they didn't get the answer correctly again. He said it's not that the numbers are too big to calculate, it's just that you haven't solved it repeatedly enough. The reason two times two is easy to answer is because you have spent years memorizing it, so much so it's now a default answer. What are you repeating? What are you doing everyday? Mastery comes by repetition, it comes by doing that thing over and over again. Here's the definition of mastery that he gave us; Mastery is not practicing until you get it right, it is practicing untill you can't get it wrong. It cannot be achieved in a day. He talked to us on the need for routines. Failure is a few simple discipline repeated everyday. Success is a few simple discipline repeated everyday. What are you repeating? What you repeat, you will become. I really enjoyed his session, it was simple truths taught really well. I have one more session to cover before I wrap up on ILS. I am Ifeoluwa Olorunfemi. Aisha, a mid-level manager at a bustling Tech Firm, had been a creative child, spending her days colouring, creating stories, and inventing games. Determined to rekindle her creative spark, Aisha decided to integrate artistry into her professional life. She started small - rearranging her workspace with vibrant colours and inspirational artwork. Then, she encouraged her team to brainstorm solutions to problems in unconventional ways, using mind maps and free writing sessions. Aisha also introduced “Creative Fridays,” where team members spent an hour each week on a passion project or learning a new skill. This initiative breathed new life into the office. Morale soared, and productivity followed suit. The team’s innovative solutions to persistent problems astonished even the most skeptical executives. Inspired by her success, Aisha extended her creativity outside the office. She took up painting again, finding that the discipline and relaxation it offered translated into greater focus and efficiency at work. NIGERIA LABOUR ACT - "A SECTION A DAY'' SECTION 53 - OFFENCES (1) Any person who removes or attempts to remove any apprentice who is above the age of twelve years and under the age of sixteen years from Nigeria without the authority in writing of the Minister shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction shall be liable to a fine not exceeding to an amount approved by the Minister or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding one year, or to both. It’s been four months I took some time away from data analysis to prepare my students for their JAMB examination. The months were filled with extensive planning, research, and committed teaching to cover the syllabus and prepare them for the exam, all with the expectation of good results. Yes, the results are out and at this time, we are gathering data on their performance. With lots of questions on my mind, I look forward to analyzing the data to find out what insights will be gleaned from it. Last week, I decided to resume my data analysis and consider which project I should pursue. Then I saw the Etuk Anietie Data Analysis Challenge on Hospital Equipment Procurement Analysis. I said to myself, "Let's see what insights can be derived from the data and attempt to win the challenge" The analysis began with an understanding of the data and the deliverables. This was followed by data cleaning and engineering features employed in the analysis. Python (Pandas) was used to clean and investigate the data as it is my preferred tool for EDA. NIGERIA LABOUR ACT - "A SECTION A DAY'' SECTION 48 - APPLICATION (1) This Part is additional to and not in derogation of Part I of this Act but shall not apply to the recruiting of citizens for service as workers in Nigeria if the recruiting - (a) is undertaken by or on behalf of an employer who does not employ more than 25 workers; or (b) is undertaken within a radius of forty kilometres from the place of employment, and is not undertaken by a professional recruiter, that is to say, a person who holds a recruiter's licence. A professional colleague, Emmanuel, Faith. GPHR, ACIPM made a post on his status some days back, encouraging us to talk about what we do in layman terms. I decided to give it a shot today. I am an #HRprofessional. In layman terms, I’m like the go-to person for keeping employees engaged, fulfilled, productive, and aligned with company goals. Sounds like a lot of work, right? Thankfully, I don’t do it alone. I work with an amazing team, and together, we make it happen. (I’ll talk about these stars another day!) For today, let’s focus on #HiringandOnboarding. In simple terms, my role involves finding the right people for my organization, interviewing them, and helping them settle in once they join. You see, finding the right people and interviewing them? That’s a divine calling on its own. To everyone who handles this daily, I celebrate your grace and dedication. When it comes to helping new joiners settle in, I take immense pleasure in ensuring they have a smooth experience—from the day they accept our offer to as long as they need me, and here’s how I make that happen: - Sending a welcome email after they accept our offer. - Liaising with the IT team to ensure their work tools are ready. - Welcoming them on their first day of resumption. - Conducting an orientation to introduce them to our company’s principles and sharing other necessary information. - Connecting them with their buddy (someone from their team who'd help them settle in quickly and feel comfortable). - Introducing them to their line manager/supervisor and ensuring clear expectations are set for their probation period. - Regularly checking in during the first few weeks to answer questions and provide feedback. This might seem like a lot, but I love doing it! It gives me so much joy knowing that an employee isn’t feeling lost or confused during their first few months. My goal is simple: to make them feel welcome, prepared, and excited to be part of the team. Next time, I’ll take on another aspect of my job and explain it in layman terms. Challenging Gender Stereotypes in Career Guidance. I recently attended a career fair where I had the opportunity to engage with brilliant Senior High School students, each full of potential and dreams for their future. However, one moment during the event left me deeply reflective. A representative from a well-known university in Accra addressed the students. While presenting, she advised the young boys to aspire to mechanical engineering careers and encouraged the young girls to pursue skills in hairdressing and nail artistry.🤯🤯🤯 While there is absolutely nothing wrong with careers in beauty and grooming — they are noble professions that require talent and creativity — I was struck by how gendered the advice was. It reflected a persistent stereotype: boys are expected to enter technical fields, while girls are steered toward traditionally “feminine” careers. This moment reminded me of the critical role we all play in shaping the mindsets of the next generation. Our words have the power to either reinforce limiting beliefs or inspire young people to see the world of possibilities before them. As leaders, educators, employers and mentors, we must be intentional about encouraging students to explore careers based on their talents, interests, and aspirations, not their gender. A young girl with a passion for engineering should feel just as supported as a young boy with a flair for hairstyling or fashion. Let’s challenge ourselves to promote inclusivity and empowerment in career guidance. 🌟 Yesterday on our National HR Mentorship Programme, we had the privilege of hosting Edward Asare, Digital Marketer for UBA, to speak on Personal Branding. Here are my key takeaways from the session: 1️⃣ Personal Branding is the consistent display of a character that is unique and authentic, allowing people to relate to you. 2️⃣ Personal Branding is for everyone, not just celebrities or people with large followings. 3️⃣ Without anything to offer, personal branding will cost you. "Single, successful, and searching for a home. Who knew independence could be so controversial?" These words capture the unexpected challenge I face as a young professional woman in Lagos, trying to find my own place in the world - quite literally. I never thought my relationship status would be a problem when looking for an apartment. But there I was, facing a landlady who seemed more concerned about my marital status than my ability to pay rent. "As a single girl, what business do you have living alone?" she asked, eyeing me suspiciously. My journey to this point hasn't been easy. I moved from a sheltered life to the busy streets of Ajah, proving I could make it on my own. I worked hard, saved money, and dreamed of a safe home with reliable electricity and friendly neighbors - just like where I grew up. But Lagos had other plans. The island was too expensive, so I looked elsewhere. That's when I hit an unexpected roadblock: the stigma of being a single woman living alone. It's frustrating to realize that in 2024, some people still can't accept that a woman can be successful and independent without raising eyebrows. All I want is a place to call my own, a space where I can build my life and career without judgment. This house-hunting experience has opened my eyes to a bigger issue in our society. It's not just about finding four walls and a roof; it's about fighting for the right to live on my own terms. As I continue my search, I wonder: When will our society catch up with the reality of independent women? How many more of us need to prove ourselves before this prejudice becomes a thing of the past?

I was Opportune to come across Changemaker Training Institute @Ajise Ifeoluwa. I registered for this course growth circle, initially when I registered for this course I do not take it serious because I was going through some personal challenges which led to my doubt of proceeding or not but having this strong conviction within me that it will later worth it if I could withstand all odds and stay focus which I yieled to my mind. Truth be told, I never imagined that I would experience high level of transformation, personal development, mindset revamp emotional intelligence, time management and most importantly the courage to make a lasting difference for myself in the community and beyond because based on the price tag, it nothing compared to the knowledge which have been inputted and impacted on me. So far within the past 2weeks at Growth circle, my experience have been wonderful, equipped me with insights, skills and value beyond the ordinary. it indeed a personal transformation, self discovery which has not only enable me to be a better version of myself but has also uplifted my passion for growth, personal development and reflection on my progress in all aspects of life. My perspection on leadership changed, have to see to myself, build myself, control my thought which leads to actions in other to lead others, also guide towards becoming the kind of leader I aspire to be while also illuminating the paths I would rather not tread.
