In order to make a successful transition it is important to conduct a skills assessment and identify their tranferability to the new area of work. Being self aware will support the individual to put together a well written CV showcasing how the skill would benefit in the new role. Doing that will support the individual project the tranferability within an interview situation.

It is important in a transition to a new career to know which skills you have to use in this new position. Make a skill list that you have improved and acquired throughout you career, including soft skills. After that, identify in the list which of your skills can be transferable or is important in the hiring process for this new role. Know what skills you will have to improve and start as sooner you can to work on this.

Switching industries is a big career pivot. I see so many waste time and energy trying to figure this out on their own. If someone is in their mid-careers, these relevant transferable skills are subtle and not obvious to the professional. Yes, list the skills, do tons of research of the job / industry and practice communicating to a new audience (networking and interviewing)--- easier said than done. My take: get a mentor or career-coach specific to the industry/role you are targeting. You can avoid the frustrations, wasting time and energy on opportunities that may not even be the right fit for you.

Having worked across multiple industries and countries for the past 25 years, I’ve come to realize that one of the keys to personal and professional growth is embracing change and diversity. The ability to switch industries or adapt to multicultural workplaces is not about knowing every detail of a new sector; it’s about mastering transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, building rapport, collaboration and leadership. They transcend industries and can be applied anywhere. The ability to navigate diverse environments and forge cross-cultural relationships has been helpful in my career journey. Start with curiosity and a growth mindset. Believe in your human skills. That’s the first step in any successful career transition.

Sich darüber bewusst zu werden und für sich selbst sichtbar zu machen ist der erste wichtige Schritt. Als Nächstes müssen diese Kompetenzen auch in den Bewerbungsunterlagen erkennbar werden. Als Vorbereitung für Interviews ist es sinnvoll, über Situationen, Projekte, Problemstellungen aus vergangenen Positionen zu reflektieren und daraus zu erarbeiten, welche Kompetenzen und Erfahrungen für die neue Position besonders wertvoll sind. Es ist wichtig zu wissen, dass die Perspektiven durch unterschiedliche Backgrounds sehr gewinnbringend für ein Unternehmen sein können.

You need creativity and critical thinking to identify and highlight transferrable skills, because they might not be too obvious. Study the requirements for the desired role, and try to find underlying connections. Here's an example. Very early in my career, to land my 1st HR Manager job, I creatively highlighted some transferrable skills. 1. Team Coordination: Previous choir leader in Uni, managing much older / higher level individuals, including instrumentalists and praise team members, all leaders in their own right. Developed resilience and emotional intelligence as a bonus. 2. Learning Agility: Transitioned from a high paying IT job (with skills I'd learned informally), to pursue HR as a passion, now a high-performing HR Team member.

1. Take small/pet projects, do them the best way you can, share the results and outcome in your resume/LinkedIn page highlighting the accomplishments. 2. Aim for quick wins - they are inspirational. Share the results in the posts and encourage discussion and seek feedback from fellow professionals with more experience to discuss and boost. 3. Come up with non-standard ideas/insights and keep sharing, you can provoke the audience to engage for discussion and conversations - become visible and gradually impressive and insightful

Percebemos que atualmente as transições de carreira são mais comuns e valorizadas! O conhecimento que você obteve na área X não será perdido, ele pode ser adaptável para a nova carreira, agregando maturidade e competências que farão de você um profissional único. Tenha claro quais são as suas principais competências e desenvolva ainda mais elas, principalmente se forem soft skills. Para aqueles pontos a desenvolver, crie um PDI, que seja mensurável e que consiga acompanhar a sua evolução! Afinal, "Nada se perde, tudo se transforma".
