What if I told you that promoting decent work could transform Nigeria's economy? Here’s my take! Earlier in the week, I had the opportunity to discuss SDG 8 with the Dataleum team during a capacity-building session focused on the Sustainable Development Goals. The insights shared were valuable and highlighted our collective power to drive positive change. SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth emphasizes the need for sound, sustainable, and inclusive economic growth, along with productive employment opportunities for everyone. This goal is particularly important in Nigeria, where the unemployment rate is approximately 33%. Achieving SDG 8 is essential for fostering a thriving economy that benefits all citizens. Impact on Nigeria's Economy In Nigeria, the informal sector accounts for approximately 65% of GDP and 80% of employment. However, many workers in this sector lack basic protections. Promoting decent work is essential for reducing poverty, increasing productivity, and fostering social stability which are three critical components for a thriving economy. By prioritizing decent work, we can create a more secure and prosperous environment for all Nigerians. Feasible Solutions 1. Invest in Skills Development: Enhance vocational training programs to align with market needs, ensuring the workforce is prepared for emerging industries. 2. Support SMEs: Create favorable policies that enable small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to thrive, as they represent 96% of businesses and are crucial for job creation. 3. Implement Fair Labor Practices: Enforce labor laws that guarantee safe working conditions and equal pay for all workers. 4. Encourage Sustainable Practices: Promote corporate social responsibility initiatives that prioritize decent working conditions across all sectors. 5. Strengthen Social Protection: Provide adequate support for informal workers to help them access safety nets during times of economic hardship. The Fate of Human Resources in the Depleting Economy of Nigeria The Nigerian economy is currently facing severe challenges, including rising inflation and depreciating naira, which have adversely affected the standard of living, especially for the youth. This economic strain has led to increased resignation rates, job abandonment, and widespread demotivation among workers. Persistent inflation, driven by rising food and fuel prices, has eroded purchasing power, making basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerians. This decline in living standards has significant implications for the workforce. Psychological Effects: The economic downturn has caused considerable psychological stress, particularly among the youth, leading to decreased job satisfaction, anxiety, and hopelessness. Fear of job loss adds to this burden as companies struggle to remain viable. Impact on Industry: The challenging economic climate has prompted many workers to resign or seek opportunities abroad or alternatives as salaries have lost value in Naira, resulting in a talent exodus that industries cannot afford. Role of Human Capital Management (HCM): HCM is crucial in addressing these issues by prioritizing the physical and psychological well-being of employees. Key strategies include: Compassionate Leadership: Adopting flexible policies and empathetic approaches to retain talent. Performance Appraisal Tools: Utilizing technical tools to recognize and reward employee contributions. -Diverse Recruitment: Expanding talent sources and providing training for underutilized labor. - Mentorship: Implementing mentorship programs to ensure knowledge transfer and prepare for workforce changes. Focus on Mental Health: Offering mental health resources and creating supportive work environments. The economic challenges in Nigeria necessitate a strong focus on human resources. By embracing compassionate leadership and prioritizing employee well-being, HCM can help navigate these turbulent times and foster a motivated workforce. A Crucial Piece of the Employment Puzzle in Nigeria - The Informal Sector. Nigeria’s informal sector has been the backbone of its economy for over five decades, accounting for an impressive 90% of new jobs. Yet, this dynamic space, home to artisans, freelancers, smallholder farmers, and digital gig workers, has yet to be explored in mainstream employment conversations. In Jobberman Nigeria's newly released 2024 Informal Sector Report, we illuminate this critical sector and uncover vital data about how informal jobs are shaping the future of work in Nigeria. Some of the highlights from the report: - The creative industry ranks as the second-largest employer of labour in the country. - The agricultural sector, led by smallholder farmers who contribute to 90% of Nigeria’s produce, remains the most significant driver of the economy. - 96% of workers in the informal sector hold degrees, but only 24% have training certifications for their core skills. - Word-of-mouth referrals account for 81.75% of employment in this sector, underscoring the importance of local networks in job creation. The report challenges the misconception that the informal sector lacks skilled labour, revealing that 80% of business owners also possess formal degrees. Share this information with any artisan you know or have come across: The Federal Government and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) have set up an initiative called Skill-Up Artisans (SUPA) https://lnkd.in/dPbGNS9m which is committed to up-skilling, licensing, and empowering 10 million artisans in Nigeria over the period of two years.  The initiative is led by the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite. The aim of this is to create a focus on blue-collar jobs, asides the white-collar ones in order to align with global shifts favoring skilled labor due to technological advancements.  This will also empower artisans through tech-enabled skills training, licensing, access to essential toolkits, and promoting industry standard excellence.
