SMG's Talking Shop Webinar took place yesterday and had a panel of experts from Boots UK, L'Oréal, and Bayer. It was a fantastic webinar on the continued growth and emergence of Retail Media Networks. Some key themes - 1st party data is key. A retailer's data is the backbone of their Retail Media Network - Use the 1st party data carefully. More regulation is around the corner - There will continue to be a growth in Retail media networks globally. Launch impactful creative that speaks to your users - Retail Media is no longer seen as bottom of the funnel. Use the channel for brand awareness too - Digital is not just on-site, but also means in-store digital and audio - Measurement remains a focus. The closed look attribution of RMNs is one of their major advantages - Short term objectives are often related to ROAS. But don't discount long term objectives such as number of new customers gained with a campaign - If you are a bricks and mortar retailer then run ROPO analysis (research online, purchase offline - and vice versa) as the majority of purchase still happen in-store - Lookalike targeting is key - both on site and off-site Look forward to the next webinar

My key message - "ride the train until you can afford your own car." Relying only on marketplaces as a commercial strategy works, but is short-sighted. The long term winners are those who build their own brand, not instead of a marketplaces strategy, but in tandem with one. Brand building is a 'longcut', not a shortcut. Repeat customers on a marketplace are nothing more than a lottery. They're on the marketplace website, not yours. They're not looking for you. Whether they find you or not is more dependent on the marketplace's priorities than leverage you have. Repeat customers on your own webstore is a considered, deliberately crafted and persistently applied strategy. Thus the lifetime value of a customer warrants the time, effort and budget to be memorable, be recalled, be revisited, be preferred and be recommended. Has Tesco got the power to be number 2 in the marketplace space in the UK? It believe it certainly does and its power is data (Clubcard Data), to be able to offer highly targeted advertising based on what you shop online or in-store. We recently attended Engage, the annual flagship event of the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB UK). The theme this year was ‘the joy of digital advertising’ – and it reminded us how it’s good to embrace all things joyful. Could CPL One help you to bring out a more joyful and authentic side of your brand or organisation’s personality? It’s not a frivolous question. Statistics shared at Engage 2024 show why being a little playful with your creative advertising content can help cut through with your audience. - 76% of people in the UK belong to a digital community (e.g. ‘BookTok’). - Children laugh 300 times per day vs 17 times for adults. - You only have about 4 or 5 hours of concentration per day. - 50% of 18-34 year olds, 39% of 35-54 year olds, and 22% of 55+ year olds trust advertising. - Since 2021, influencer, online and social media have grown the most in trust (33%, 27% and 26% respectively). - 18-34 year olds trust all forms of advertising between 40-50% compared to 20-30% for 55+ (with cinema, TV and OOH trusted the most for 18-34 year olds). - We spend our lives trying to get rid of ads (e.g. paying for subscriptions to apps just to have an ad-free experience), but 90% of WeTransfer users (both free and paid) prefer the site with ads… Read the full article, complete with the insights we gained from the day, here: https://lnkd.in/ea2cgeBf
