“Wellbeing perks don’t work”. So says Paul Devoy, CEO of Investors in People in this article from HR magazine (link in comments). This is something I’ve thought for a long time. I think it became really clear to me when the free counselling sessions I’d been ‘gifted’ by HR as a way to cope with a toxic work situation were coming to an end… My feelings had been validated by the counsellor in session one. After that, we mostly discussed Brexit. You see, no amount of counselling sessions were ever going to change the toxic leadership we were all experiencing. Or the increase in workload without explanation. Or the bullying tendencies of a colleague. You get the idea… As Paul Devoy says, ignoring the fundamentals that are causing the problems and offering yoga lunches instead, is only storing up trouble for the organisation in future. As well as eroding the trust and the wellbeing of employees. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping leaders develop the personal awareness and necessary skills to deal with the fundamentals. With confidence and direction. So they can take care of their own wellbeing, as well as their employees. “The only constant in life is change” Heraclitus Last week at the CIPD Festival of Work “change” was a big topic of conversation. I also promised in last week’s post to share the Transformational Leadership Qualities that we teach in our THRIVE for Leaders Programme. Today I co-delivered a 3 hour Masterclass on Navigating Change with the Wonderful Becki Nazareth for a group of 40 Auditors for a global bank facing lots of change. CHANGE IS EVERYWHERE! Old “change management” philosophies are outdated because they rely on stability either side of that change. With global change in climate, economics, government, tech and more, change is constant (thanks Heraclitus 👆) This means that those old models often end in burnout. 📣📣We need to replace Change management with Change Mindset.📣📣 Leaders, by employing the Transformational Leadership Qualities below you can help your organisations and teams navigate change? 1. Megawatt Coaching has had a feisty new revamp 🖤 . I've rebuilt my business to offer new corporate coaching services, workshops and retreats to comms professionals via their employers. From my experience of coaching individuals privately, the employer is often the first to benefit so I want my support to help some awesome comms teams and agencies to shine collectively and do brilliant work. I'll be helping in-house comms teams and agencies to: Ground and stay present under intense pressure through somatic practices, visualisations and meditations, alongside support with the mind and its beliefs - super important when your team is facing high-pressure situations and need to reduce stress levels without cutting workloads... Build visibility and commercial credibility: One of my favourite chestnuts is the lack of self-worth among comms folk, so I am supporting comms teams and agencies to go beyond presentation skills and outward displays of fake confidence using my psychodynamic training. This does wonders for the business reputation and strategic impact of your team's amazing work. Boost motivation and encourage employees to stay the course: There's no doubt that our industry has been pivoting and shuffling its way towards an updated position in the marketing mix. Now it's time to align individuals with a sense of why and how they want to be a part of its future within your organisation.
