Today's a perfect example of why I love what I do. This morning kicks off with executive coaching, working with a leader to sharpen their focus and strategies. By mid-morning, I'll be collaborating with a stakeholder to plan an organisational coaching session for a leadership team—setting the stage for collective growth. This afternoon, it's on to a discovery session with a local business owner. And to wrap up the day, I'll be facilitating an online workshop with a global team. Each of these activities, though varied, shares a common purpose: GROWTH 📈 Whether it's personal, team, or business development, every interaction is a step toward creating stronger, more resilient leaders and organisations. I’ve worked with 2 different groups of managers this week delivering coaching skills training. In the practice sessions it’s always so interesting to witness folks resisting and then slipping into giving advice or steering their coachee with a “have you thought about doing ..? question. It sounds so simple when we talk through the concept of listening and asking open questions, but when we try it out there’s often a realisation of how little our coaching muscles get chance to practice in our day to day. And how easy it is to be drawn into being directive, even if we couch it as coaching! And then, given the space to practice, it’s always incredible to see the impact of even a short 20 minute coaching conversation with a peer. There were many insights! Coaching - simple but not easy. And hugely powerful.

👋 Errr, excuse me...So sorry to disturb you, but..... I've been conducting some 'under-the-radar' observations this week 🕵‍♀️ and I've heard some very interesting things. Things that I expected to hear but they continue to make me feel sad... Here are a few tasters 1. "Sorry, but can I just say....." 2. "I have no idea if this will make any sense, but...." 3. "Sorry, I may have missed what was said, but.... 4. "I may be being naïve here, but..." 5. "This may be a daft question, but..." These words were mainly uttered by women (but not exclusively by any means). Of course apologising is a social norm and is often seen as a sign of politeness and accountability. Yet when it comes to the workplace, over-apologising can seriously hinder career progression....and here's why. 1. Perception of Confidence: Constantly saying "I'm sorry" can create an impression that you lack confidence or are unsure of your decisions. Confidence is essential for leadership roles and career advancement. When you apologise excessively, others may perceive you as less capable. 2. Gender Bias: Research shows that women tend to over-apologise more than men. Unfortunately, this can reinforce gender stereotypes. Women who apologise excessively may be seen as less assertive, even if their competence remains unchanged. 3. Decision-Making: Over-apologising can affect decision-making. When you apologise for every choice, it dilutes the impact of genuine apologies. Leaders frequently need to make tough calls without constant self-doubt. Trust your judgment and apologise sincerely when necessary. The Key Drivers of Change in (Potentially Excellent) Training Programs I’m on a bit of a rampage here! Digging for the gems. I want to get to the bottom of what makes great training great and what makes poor training poor. You may have seen some recent articles and posts from me on this. (Fun Fact: I’m just getting started!) The thing is, a lot of potentially excellent training can be very poor, and some potentially average training can be quite good. So, let’s define ‘good’ and ‘poor’ training. Good training (my def) is simply training that produces significant, meaningful change in the vast majority of participants. Poor training, on the other hand, doesn’t! Poor training can look good. It may have the ideal setting, a fantastic lunch, and a charismatic presenter (who comes across as someone who has never made a mistake). The room is buzzing and the feedback is glowing—‘What a fantastic presentation!!’ But … if the participants return to their lives and little changes in their world, then the training was a waste of everyone’s time. In previous posts, people have contributed that the following things need to be in place for training to ‘be good,’ i.e., to bring about meaningful and significant change in most participants: - Participants need to be on board with the training—they need to want it. - The leaders need to be actively involved. - The training needs to be practical and relevant. - It needs to run over a period of time (months), involving multiple sessions. - The information needs to be ‘trickle fed’ rather than ‘fire-hosed.’ Let’s assume we have some training for which all of the above factors are in place. Does this guarantee the training will bring about meaningful and significant change in most participants? No! I don’t think so. (What about you?) So, my question is—and I truly want your input—what else is required for training to bring about meaningful and significant change in most participants (assuming it’s relevant, practical, long-term, participants want it, and the leaders are involved)? Our free "Leading Others" programme closes today. This was an experiment for us to see: 1. What type of appetite there is to consume audio content in a more guided setting, combined with reflective activities and scenarios. 2. Whether the formula we had cooked up was impactful/useful to our target audience. 3. Whether time-limited free content could work as a way to introduce new people to Assemble You. In all three areas, it's been incredibly useful. We've learned: 1. Yes, a more guided setting is very helpful to certain groups. 2. The formula was good but actually needed a few tweaks (thanks to everyone who provided feedback!) 3. We've had over 200 people register, mostly from organic LinkedIn activity and a couple of email promotions. We're going to make more of these available to our existing clients and partners.
