🚀 "Nice" leaders don't change the world. Neither do tyrants. True leadership excellence lies in the sweet spot between empowerment and ambitious standards. Here's why: 1️⃣ Empowerment without high expectations leads to complacency 2️⃣ High standards without support create burnout 3️⃣ The magic happens when you blend both As a former fighter pilot and executive, I've seen this balance save lives and transform businesses. Key takeaways from my latest blog: 1. Set bold, challenging targets that inspire 2. Provide autonomy, but be clear about standards 3. Offer robust support to meet high expectations 4. Hold people accountable to excellence 5. Celebrate when ambitious goals are achieved Ready to elevate your leadership? Are leaders born or built? In our experience, leadership is something that can be learned and developed, and is certainly not one-size-fits-all. When setting out to find new leaders, boards need to focus on three things: 1. Be specific about the challenges being faced and the qualities needed to address them 2. Do not be tempted to look for more of what you already have, or those who are a “good cultural fit” as this will ultimately contribute to a lack of diversity and group thinking. Look for someone who complements the existing team…an opportunity to drive real culture change! 3. Ensure you have an objective candidate evaluation process in place that provides a comprehensive understanding of not just what candidates have achieved, but how they achieved it, and how they behave as a leader. Many leaders have mastered important left-brained executive skills, like financial acumen and strategic management. However, aligning their vision and aspirations with organizational performance requires mastery of the dance to manage competing demands, including left- and right-brained leadership skills. An “inside-out” leadership approach is key to master this balance. This method emphasizes personal growth to transform leaders into more self-aware, resilient, and vulnerable individuals who can inspire their teams and create a high-performing culture. In this article, adapted from our upcoming book, The Journey of Leadership, Hans-Werner Kaas, Kurt Strovink, Ramesh Srinivasan, and I make the case for leaders to embrace the human side of leadership—especially in an era of disruption and AI: https://mck.co/45rXMzH #TheJourneyOfLeadershipBook #Leadership #Purpose

My colleague and co-author Dana Maor describes the pillars of our human-centric leadership approach, outlining the need to embrace empathy, compassion, vulnerability, humility, while balancing these traits with confidence, resilience and courage, to inspire and engage the broader organization and external stakeholders. The „inside out“ leadership approach needs to start with every leader‘s self-awareness and self-reflection, striving for inner mastery, while adopting and displaying these utmost human behaviors. Dana Maor, Kurt Strovink, and Ramesh Srinivasan, and I are looking forward to discuss the key insights and findings of our book „The Journey of Leadership - How CEOs Learn to Lead From the Inside Out".
