Over the past 4 years UKSI’s Athlete Health Team have worked closely with the British Cycling women’s sprint squad to help them identify the difference between good & bad pain 🚴♀️ Through this approach, the squad have experienced just one case of back pain since we got involved! Back in 2019, the British Cycling women’s sprint squad missed 458 training days due to lower back pain. UKSI’s Athlete Health Team was subsequently brought in to combat this. As a result, cases of back pain plummeted which helped the women’s sprint squad go on to become Olympic and World champions this year!

The UKSI’s Clinical Lead for Female Athlete Health & Performance Dr Kate Hutchings was recently invited to the Norwegian Olympic Institute, Olympiatoppen, to join female athlete experts from around the world to discuss Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
