So pleased that this latest research has been published. There is a lack of research around women sports officials, and so this is an important step forward in this area. We need to grow and develop the evidence base, and our understanding and we hope that this research will help with this. The importance of having mentors and a sense of community, as well as limiting abuse, time limitations, stress, federation/association concerns, and reduced advancement opportunities are all essential to consider. Reducing the frequency of abuse was associated with relatively high probabilities of expressing turnover intentions. Establishing a system with mentors can help reduce these intentions. Despite the need for mentoring initiatives to be successful as sporting organisations try and maximise officiating numbers, successful mentoring requires careful planning and management, as well as a critical mass of officials willing to mentor. This can be difficult to promote alongside other officiating and work-related commitments. Turnover intentions are especially high for women who have officiated for between 16 and 20 years and sport managers and sport federations need to focus on the lower levels of sport, such as the grassroots and junior levels, where turnover intentions are more pronounced. There are a number of potential strategies that could be used to retain sport officials. For example, sport federations could promote the importance of women officials through increased marketing and promotion. Federations could consider strategies to help with childcare, maternity leave, and family life, which might alleviate women officials’ reported stress and time issues. Our very own Assia Grazioli-Venier wrote this piece for Sports Business Journal at the start of the year, on why investing in women's healthcare is key to the growth and success of women's sports. “The commercialization of women’s sports depends on improved athlete performance outcomes to meet growing audience entertainment expectations. As it stands, female athletes are nowhere close to their full potential because knowledge is relatively limited on how their bodies perform in sport. Women were regularly excluded from clinical trials until 1993, when Congress passed an inclusion law. This lack of participation hampered our understanding of female-specific health issues and put us far behind the ball in terms of on-field performance. Even today it is estimated that under 10% of all exercise science studies focus exclusively on women. Such a privilege to share our findings for the first time at Women In Sport Congress 2024 on our study 'Investigating the Prevalence of Low Energy Availability, Disordered Eating, and Eating Disorders in Female Track and Field Athletes in the United States'. Some key takeaways: *LEA and ED/DE are common in this population: high school and college athletes, and potentially those competing in field events (e.g., throwers and jumpers) were at an increased risk. *Professional athletes had a lower proportion of at-risk athletes: low LEA risk in competitive track and field athletes supports the importance of preventing REDs to help improve the health and performance of female athletes. *Screening protocols and preventative initiatives ought to be employed + administered across all levels of the sport: governing bodies should prioritize preventative efforts (e.g., education programs, establish strong referral networks to REDs-informed multidisciplinary team, policy changes to reduce REDs risk factors). The WHO Youth Council has launched its #YouthDeclaration with its vision for healthier societies on this year’s #WorldHealthSummit in Berlin. The Youth Declaration, entirely developed by young health leaders in a months-long thinking process since March 2024, is calling on policymakers to better leverage the potential of youth and next generation experts and incorporate their perspectives to achieve social progress. Bertelsmann Stiftung, as well as several German and international youth organizations are supporting the Youth Declaration. The young leaders have postulated 10 calls to action in three priority areas that require collective efforts of policymakers, researchers, civil society, international organizations and the private sector. The three priority areas are ➡ Promoting health education and literacy ➡ Ensuring accessible and sustainable healthcare ➡ Transforming and elevating youth leadership Brigitte M. Mohn, Executive Director of the Bertelsmann Stiftung: “Health has many facets and is highly relevant to the further development and transformation of societies on all continents. We need the perspectives of young people here. They must necessarily be involved in all decisions, for example in the transition to a digital and sustainable economy, the structuring of social life in the digital age, and the development of new ways to ensure global access to education and natural resources. They are the ones who must help shape the future of their countries and take responsibility for it at a later date.” The Youth Council, of 25 young health and care experts from all corners of the world, was established in early 2023 by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to advise and partner with WHO’s top leadership. Because we took this unbelievably fantastic task from the Bertelsmann Stiftung literally - we didn't ask a single question, but instead gave 13 fantastic and committed people with impressive biographies from all over the world a voice to tell us what they would like to say about the launch of the Hashtag #YouthDeclaration at the World Health Summit. Hi all!! It’s been a while but I’m finally back with a brand new blog🤩 This weeks article delves into the ongoing issue surrounding the lack of sport and exercise science research in women’s sport. In 2020, only 6% of medical research was done exclusively on female athletes - a stat that certainly doesn’t mirror the current growth of the game. Although women’s sport is reaching new heights, female athletes will continue to be sidelined if science and research fail to play catch up. To optimise female athletic performance, we need far more research to understand the complexities around women’s health which have been stigmatised for decades. How can we expect elite female athletes to reach their full potential if they continue to follow guidelines tailored towards the physiology of a man. More so, there are countless of female-related health issues (i.e. menstruation, pregnancy, oral contraception) which remain incredibly understudied, meaning female athletes are receiving less valuable support. And with the ACL crisis taking over women’s football, it is more crucial than ever to invest into research about athlete health and injury prevention.
