🚨🐟 Overfishing is pushing our ocean to the brink. Four years past the UK's latest deadline to end overfishing, it’s time for real government action NOW. 🎣 Ending overfishing is integral to a healthy ocean, which in turn is essential for both communities and planet. 🌍 We've crafted an ambitious vision to turn the tide on overfishing. Read our roadmap to #SaveOurSeas here: https://lnkd.in/eSyMA5pq 🌊 Our seas can’t wait any longer. We must #EndOverfishing.

✨ A thriving seal colony is in residence at Orford Ness in Suffolk! 🦭 Thanks to minimal human disturbance & natural shelter, this site has seen 80 grey seal pups born this winter alone, with numbers growing each year. A win for marine life! 🌊 Read more: https://lnkd.in/efSqj7k9

🐋 A humpback whale has made one of the longest and most unusual migrations ever recorded by scientists! The male whale travelled at least 13,000km between distant breeding sites, spotted in the Pacific Ocean off Colombia in 2017, then again near Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean in 2022. This unusual route was possibly driven by the climate crisis depleting its food sources, such as krill, forcing the whale to travel further and take more winding routes. 🚨🌊 NORTH SEA TRACKER: 1.9 TONNE CHEMICAL SPILL ⚠️ ☢️ A massive chemical spill from an oil rig off Scotland was recorded on 4th November. No formal investigation was opened, despite the potential impacts on surrounding #ocean habitats and wildlife. ☠️🐬 🛢️ #BigOil is leaking hundreds of tonnes of oil & chemicals into UK seas each year. Govt MUST take control and increase regulation of an industry with a long history of environmental harm. ACT NOW. 🎉 GOOD NEWS: 2024 is set to be the first full year where UK renewables – wind, solar and hydropower – generate more electricity than fossil fuels! A fair transition to a renewable future is the only way forward for our ocean, our climate and our people. We have the power, it's now up to us to charge full steam ahead, and ditch fossil fuels once and for all. #EndOffshoreDrilling #BigOil #Renewables #GoodNews #Ocean Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejEfXGbe

‼️ MUST READ: A 14-hour shift aboard a bottom-trawl fishing boat exposes the destruction left behind. Bottom trawling is laying waste to our ocean. Marine wildlife and ocean habitats are being destroyed. And although this particular story happened in Spain, bottom-trawl fishing takes place in the UK too. Even our supposedly “protected” waters. But as written by Julia Ochs, "ending these destructive practices isn’t just about saving fish and marine ecosystems; it’s also about improving the lives of the fishermen themselves – a compelling reason to get them on board. Our fragile ocean ecosystems are vital to sustaining life on Earth." "Prioritising their protection should, I hope, anchor us all in common cause." 🐟 The ban on sandeel fishing in UK waters is CRITICAL to protect our seabirds and marine habitats. 🪶 We've written to the EU Commissioner, Costa Kadis, to ask him to step up as the #ocean champion he promised to be and withdraw the EU's opposition! Our seas need true protection! 🌊
We are going into the next round to save Puffins! 💪 Yesterday, we sent a letter to Commissioner Costas Kadis and asked him to be the champion of the ocean he promised to be. BirdLife, the RSPB, and 31 NGOs demand to support the sandeel fishing ban in UK and Scottish waters. The renewable energy sector, represented by WindEurope, also reached out with a letter to emphasize the vital role of resilient seas to combat climate change. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴? The European Commission is questioning the sandeel fishing closure in Scottish and UK waters and opened an arbitration tribunal to determine whether the closure is in line with the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. The EU’s current stance not only challenges the UK’s ability to deliver ecosystem recovery but directly threatens the achievement of EU and global environmental targets. While the arbitration tribunal unfolds, Atlantic Puffins are starving. Sandeels are the main food source for many seabirds and sea mammals. Ending sandeel fishing in these waters is a crucial step to stopping declining seabird populations and to start creating resilient and biodiverse marine ecosystems! #restorenature #overfishing LPO France DOF BirdLife (Dansk Ornitologisk Forening) Oceana Seas At Risk SPEA - Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves Sciaena Ορνιθολογική BirdLife Greece Scottish Wildlife Trust Vogelbescherming Nederland BirdLife Sweden Deutsche Stiftung Meeresschutz Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland e.V. 🔊 🔊 Noise pollution from oil and gas exploration is causing huge harm to our ocean wildlife. Dr Heike Veste has been listening in on the watery world of orcas, minke, humpback, sperm, long-finned pilot whales and, recently, even blue whales, for years from her home in the Norwegian Arctic Circle. But deafening noise from oil and gas exploration, the military, cruise liners, cargo ships and tour boats is growing in both frequency and volume. And it's pushing marine mammals to the brink. It's time to #EndOffshoreDrilling. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gqPigX3D
