The Group’s Correspondents Committee would like to send Season's Greetings to all of the Clubs' Listed Correspondents and thank them for their crucial contributions to the Clubs' work during 2025, which was the Group’s 125th Anniversary. The Committee's new Chair, Guy Harris, says "We were delighted to welcome many of you to Hong Kong in June for our second Regional Correspondents Seminar and hope to see many more of you at the next global Conference, probably in 2026. We hope you enjoy this short video with highlights from the event, which is a good reminder of the relationships we have built together over the years. The event was also a great opportunity to share important messages about the Group's activities, particularly in relation to safety and sustainability." About us
The International Group of P&I Clubs (the IG) is an unincorporated association of the 12 principal underwriting Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Associations (Clubs) and their Affiliated Associations that between them provide liability cover (protection and indemnity) for approximately 90% of the world's ocean-going tonnage. Each IG Club is an independent, non-profit making mutual insurance association, providing P&I insurance cover for its shipowner and charterer members against third party liabilities relating to the use and operation of ships. Each Club is controlled by its members through a board of directors, or committee, elected from the membership. IG P&I Clubs cover a wide range of liabilities, including loss of life and personal injury to crew, passengers and others on board, cargo loss and damage, pollution by oil and other hazardous substances, wreck removal, collision and damage to property. Clubs also provide a wide range of services to their members on claims handling, legal issues and loss prevention, and often play a leading role in coordinating the response to, and management of, maritime casualties. One of the main roles of the IG is co-ordinating the operation and regulation of the P&I Clubs’ claim-sharing agreement (the Pooling Agreement). All qualifying claims in excess of US$10 million are shared between Clubs in accordance with the terms of the Pooling Agreement. Much of the Group's work involves defining and refining the scope of cover for pool claims, and the rules and guidelines under which claims are shared. This claim-sharing agreement is underpinned by a very extensive, annually renewed, market reinsurance programme. The Group also provides a unique and invaluable forum for sharing information on matters of concern and an effective voice to speak collectively on important industry issues, for example on international conventions and legislation affecting shipowners’ liabilities and related insurance matters.

The Group spent an interesting few days last week at the UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Working Group VI session, which took place at the Vienna International Centre. Working Group VI is currently developing a new instrument on negotiable cargo documents (NCDs). The Group’s Bills of Lading Committee Chair Helenka Leary and Camilla Slater were able to assist the Working Group by providing input from a maritime bill of lading and P&I perspective. As well as being a valuable experience, this was also a great opportunity to connect with colleagues across the wider industry. #PandI #MarineInsurance

A number of leading Group Club speakers joined the salvage industry at Seatrade Maritime Events' annual Salvage and Wreck Conference in London this week. Amongst the topics discussed, Group CEO Nick Shaw led an engaging conversation alongside Sam Kendall-Marsden and other industry experts on the salvage industry’s preparedness for casualties involving alternative fuels. The session also touched on the difficulties presented when ships in distress are not offered a port of refuge. Capt Ajaz Peermohamed joined a panel looking at how a casualty involving a very large container vessel would be managed, including how industry can best collaborate with government in high profile and complex casualties. Andreas Brachel spoke about how ESG can be incorporated into casualty response efforts drawing a clear distinction between the immediate emergency response and subsequent wreck removal phase. This led to an engaging debate about whether incorporating ESG into casualty response costs more in practice. Thanks to all the Group Club speakers also including Ben Harris, Nina M. Hanevold-Sandvik and Edward Wollaston. As the industry grapples with decarbonisation, other ESG issues, War, and Sanctions, increased media interest in wreck removals, plus other emerging risks and issues, not least how to recruit and train the salvors of the future, it was good to see the Group Clubs front and centre in these conversations. #salvage #maritime #PandI

Last week the Group Clubs organised and presented an afternoon of presentations to the LLM in International Maritime Law students from the Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law, Swansea University at the London P&I Club office in London. It was a pleasure to meet the student attendees, greet Professor Tabetha Kurtz-Shefford and Professor George Leloudas, and listen to presentations from experts in UW, Claims and LP: Chris Adie, John Warman and Petar Modev. #MarineInsurance #PandI #PandIQ
Our LLM students were treated to a fantastic seminar on P&I Clubs yesterday, thanks to the generosity and expertise of Annie Stow, the London P&I Club, and the International Group of P&I Clubs. Apart from Annie, who is the guiding force behind these educational experiences, we are particularly indebted to James Bean and John Warman from the London Club for hosting and inspiring our students to consider claims careers within the P&I sector, Chris Adie of the West for providing a unique perspective on the underwriting factors involved in the placement process, and Petar Modev of the UK P&I Club for highlighting the critical role of loss prevention. Dr Tabetha Kurtz-Shefford and Professor George Leloudas, who joined our students (with Xinge Li), said, "This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry. By providing our students with direct access to leading practitioners, we ensure they are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the ever-evolving legal landscape. We are grateful to Annie and look forward to welcoming her to Swansea next year.".
