About us
The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law was established in 2000 as a specialist research and professional training centre within Swansea University's College of Law and Criminology. It promotes research and teaching of the highest standard in the fields of international shipping and trade law; and fosters co-operation with other academic institutions as well as professional, commercial, shipping, insurance and business organisations. It also houses the library for the Association of Average Adjusters. Over the last two decades, the IISTL has gained a worldwide reputation for its contribution to research, policy-making, professional training and teaching while maintaining close connections with leading maritime and international organisations, including maritime research centres at Dalian, Oslo, Rotterdam, Shanghai and Tromsø, along with prestigious entities such as the IMO, BILA, BMLA and the CMI. IISTL members have been actively involved in debates on various reformation aspects of shipping and insurance law, both at domestic and international levels. Some have served on working groups of inter-governmental organisations and provided legal advice to key NGOs and institutions. The IISTL operates a wide variety of professional courses for directors, managers and employees of shipping corporations, as well as a bespoke training programme for young solicitors working in the City Law firms. The IISTL also works closely with shipping organisations, such as the BIMCO, in organising professional training courses. Membership of the IISTL has grown considerably and it is proud to be one of the largest specialist research centres in Europe dedicated to shipping and trade law. It has a substantial research library of specialist materials available to IISTL members, PhD students and visiting scholars. The award-winning IP Wales, which raises understanding of Intellectual Property among Welsh businesses, operates under the auspices of the IISTL.

International Commercial Arbitration LLM Module Achieves Prestigious Recognition from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Great news for our existing and future students! And also those who completed their LLMs and studied this module! We are pleased to announce that the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) has re-granted recognised provider status to Swansea University's LLM programmes for the International Commercial Arbitration Module, a key component of our LLM programmes. This prestigious recognition underscores the module's high quality and relevance to international commercial arbitration. As a result of this recognition, students who successfully complete the module will be eligible to register as associate members of the CIArb, a globally renowned professional body for dispute resolution practitioners. This membership provides students a valuable opportunity to network with leading arbitrators, access exclusive resources, and advance their careers in this dynamic field. Professor George Leloudas, the module co-ordinator, stated: “We and our students value our long-standing relationship with the CIArb, and the re-accreditation of our programme is a testament to the quality of our arbitration education and our commitment to educating the next generation of arbitrators globally. The Arbitration module has always been a valuable part of our LLM programmes and attracts students from different legal disciplines and parts of the world; our cooperation with the CIArb can only improve it.”. The International Commercial Arbitration Module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of arbitration's legal and practical aspects. It covers critical topics such as the arbitration agreement, the arbitral process, the role of courts in arbitration and the enforcement of arbitral awards. The module is taught by experienced academics (Dr Aygun Mammadzada and Prof George Leloudas) and practitioners , ensuring that students receive a rigorous and practical education. Our LLM students were treated to a fantastic seminar on P&I Clubs yesterday, thanks to the generosity and expertise of Annie Stow, the London P&I Club, and the International Group of P&I Clubs. Apart from Annie, who is the guiding force behind these educational experiences, we are particularly indebted to James Bean and John Warman from the London Club for hosting and inspiring our students to consider claims careers within the P&I sector, Chris Adie of the West for providing a unique perspective on the underwriting factors involved in the placement process, and Petar Modev of the UK P&I Club for highlighting the critical role of loss prevention. Dr Tabetha Kurtz-Shefford and Professor George Leloudas, who joined our students (with Xinge Li), said, "This collaboration exemplifies our commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry. By providing our students with direct access to leading practitioners, we ensure they are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the ever-evolving legal landscape. We are grateful to Annie and look forward to welcoming her to Swansea next year.".

Delighted that Professor andrew tettenborn, a senior member of the Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law, is the current editor of Clerk & Lindsell on Torts. This book is celebrating its 135th anniversary. You can read an article below in which Andrew charts the 135 year old trajectory of this internationally respected book showing how it has “moved with the times, while still remaining recognisably connected to what it was in 1889".

A great way to finish the Guest Lecture series for the first term! We are grateful to Poppy Flury, Paralegal, HFW and Richard Neylon, Partner, HFW for a very educational and entertaining lecture “Shipping Under Attack! - From Houthi Rebels to Somali Pirates – A Maritime Lawyer's Role in Handling a Major Marine Casualty". It was also fantastic that they spent time with our LLM students after the lecture talking about the legal practice and various opportunities in shipping and practice. Their valuable advice will assist our LLM students immensely in terms of planning their employment strategy. Richard is a proud Swansea graduate and handles major marine casualties and disputes for H&M, P&I and War insurers. He has been involved in many of the recent high-profile incidents in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and in the Ukraine. He has particular experience of war risks, collisions, fires/explosions, salvage, piracy, capture/seizure, groundings, and unsafe port claims – often involving complex multi-jurisdictional litigation and arbitration. He also heads HFW's global Complex Environments team, where he manages and resolves incidents in complex and hostile environments. Our guest lectures will continue in the second term with impressive speakers from practice.
