Improving board effectiveness through diversity of thought
About us
Changing the Chemistry (CtC) seeks to increase diversity of thought in the boardroom (diversity of thought encompasses identity, cognitive and experiential diversity). Evidence demonstrates that increasing board diversity improves the performance of organisations and can thereby also benefit the wider economy. CtC operates as a Scottish head-quartered charitable voluntary mutual peer-support network made up of a multi-talented group drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds seeking to improve board effectiveness. Our unique approach is that we share the responsibility to help each other, volunteering our time and skills in a peer-to-peer support network. We provide practical support to members who you will recognise by their energy, skills, achievements, insight and potential to contribute. 1. Our members receive the skills, confidence and knowledge to secure a non-executive Board position. 2. Our members receive support to ensure they are an asset to any Board they sit on, and organisation they represent. 3. We promote the benefits of a diverse Board to organisations throughout Scotland, the UK and potentially beyond. 4. We support organisations in increasing the diversity, efficiency and functionality of their Board. By our 10th anniversary in August 2021, over 290 board roles have been filled by members of CtC and over 30 board Chairs! Find out more about becoming a member or working with us - visit our website.

Check out the 2024 Spencer Stuart Board Index which analyses the board governance practices of the top 150 FTSE companies, according to their market value on 30 April 2024. This year’s UK Board Index finds that there has been significant progress in female representation in senior board roles. However, progress is uneven, with the number of female chairs and CEOs plateauing . 12.5% of all directors identify as having an ethnic minority background compared with 13% in 2022. There is less diversity among new directors with many boards opting for experience rather than new and more diverse talent. The Board Index also shines a light on the lack of age diversity on UK boards with 6% of newly appointed NEDs are under the age of 50. Changing the Chemistry (SCIO) aims to promote diversity of thought in the boardroom. We are excited about our refreshed 3 year strategy recently launched at our AGM. We will continue to focus on achieving change by supporting and advocating for all groups who are currently under-represented on boards. Within this overall aim we aim to further broaden the diversity of our membership and in particular, target support for • people aged 18-30 years • those that are part of the ‘global majority’. We look forward to working with our members and partners to continue to promote diversity on boards in 2025. Close the Gap, Scotland's expert on gender equality in the labour market, is looking for new trustees. Close the Gap has a vision of a Scotland where all women have a good working life. They do this through policy advocacy, supporting employers to take action to close their gender pay gap, and developing innovative research to grow the evidence base on women’s experiences of work. Close the Gap was established in 2001 and became a charity in 2016. It’s an exciting time to join the board as the organisation explores further opportunities for development. The successful candidates will be committed to women's labour market equality and be able to think strategically and creatively. Close the Gap recognises that diverse boards are more effective and result in better governance practice. Knowledge and experience in fundraising or equality and/or human rights would be a benefit.
