Teo Eng Seng, the feisty 86 year old artist who helped shape Singapore’s art scene. Known for his emotive and raw style, Teo experiments with various mediums, including oil painting and plastic waste, but is most famous for creating “paperdyesculp”, — dyed papier-mâché mixed with other materials and shaped into artworks. We had the immense pleasure of sitting down with the Cultural Medallion recipient for a candid chat about how he carved out his own distinct style across his seven-decade strong career, and safe to day, we are inspired. Currently on display at the Gallery, “We’re Happy. Are You Happy?” is Teo’s most expansive solo exhibition yet, and we invite everyone to celebrate Teo’s profound impact and experience his playful, inventive works up close. On display till 2 Feb 2025. More details on the exhibition: https://lnkd.in/gBiNz4bb #WereHappyAreYouHappy #TeoEngSeng #NationalGallerySingapore #LetArtSurpriseYou

The Art And Soul Of Southeast Asia
About us
National Gallery Singapore is a leading visual arts institution overseeing the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Situated at the birthplace of modern Singapore, in the heart of the Civic District, the Gallery is housed in two national monuments – City Hall and former Supreme Court – that have been beautifully restored and transformed into this exciting 64,000 square metres venue. Reflecting Singapore’s unique heritage and geographical location, the Gallery aims to be a progressive museum that creates dialogues between the art of Singapore, Southeast Asia and the world to foster and inspire a creative and inclusive society. This is reflected in our collaborative research, education initiatives, long-term and special exhibitions, and innovative programming. The Gallery also works with international museums such as National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Orsay and Tate Britain to jointly present Southeast Asian art in the global context, positioning Singapore as a key node in the global visual arts scene. In 2020, the Gallery was the only museum in Southeast Asia that received a ranking in The Art Newspaper’s annual global survey of attendance at art museums, taking 20th place. In 2018, the Gallery was also the first museum in Asia to receive the Children in Museums Award by the European Museum Academy and Hands On! International Association of Children in Museums. It also won the awards for “Best Theme Attraction” at TTG Travel Awards 2017, “Best Attraction Experience”, “Breakthrough Contribution to Tourism” and “Best Customer Service (Attractions)” at the prestigious Singapore Tourism Awards in 2016 for its role in adding to the vibrancy of Singapore’s tourism landscape.

Last month, the Gallery launched "The New Moons Ink Art Lecture" series, a bi-annual programme on ink art. Inspired by master ink artist Liu Kuo-sung’s epic landscapes and his various innovations in ink art, the programme series embraces the manifold possibilities of ink—both as a medium and a form of expression. By highlighting regional and international scholarship on ink art, the programme celebrates and investigates how the art form continues to be relevant today. To mark the launch of this inaugural programme, we invited Chinese art critic and curator Li Xianting for a lecture on the evolution of Chinese literati painting and its spirit. Together with former Director of the Gallery and Singapore Art Museum, Kwok Kian Chow, they further explored the historical evolution of the New Literati spirit. #NationalGallerySingapore #LetArtSurpriseYou

Last week, we lit our colleagues' day up with a joyous Deepavali party! 🌟 Our celebration was filled with delicious traditional favourites like Murukku, Chai, and Samosa, along with a lively Panipuri station. As we enjoyed these treats, we heard from our colleagues about how they typically celebrate the holiday and our D&I team also shared about the festival's significance. 🪔 The festivities were topped off with a quiz and creative sand art Rangoli activity, sparking friendly competition and laughter. At the Gallery, we believe in embracing diversity and fostering a workplace that celebrates cultural differences. Together with the #PublicLibrarySG team, the Gallery has designed a unique red-winged #BookBugs character armed with a paintbrush named Art-terfly as part of this special card release.
