Our Head and Co-Founder, Pei Ying Loh presented at CEST-LA-VIZ last month in Utrecht organised by Graphic Hunters ! The day was filled with innovative ideas, and challenging perspectives around how data can be fuel for creativity, but also flawed, biased, subjective, eurocentric and haunted. Kontinentalist contributed on how we may make data visualisation relevant for Asian concerns and challenges, and what it means to centre communities in data storytelling. Thank you to goof van de winkel and the other speakers for an amazing event! About us
Kontinentalist tells simple, powerful data stories about Asia. We use creative narratives and visualisation to make Asia’s data a talking point, bridging research and the public. Many organisations find it hard to share rich data outside their fields, largely because it's hard to make data engaging for everyday readers. Our stories help make data memorable and inspiring—even fun! Data is powerful, but it can feel heavy and confusing. Ever stared down a massive spreadsheet for insights, or wondered what’s going on with yet another exploding rainbow pie chart? Yeah, so have we. But there’s a different way to talk about data. All around the world, companies, NGOs, government agencies, and researchers use immersive digital storytelling to inspire people with data. We help you do that by crafting data-driven stories that stick. It’s a delicate process that takes weeks and months. Our team of designers, developers, and writers uses an open, exploratory process to find the best angle for each story, matching content with creativity. Curious how we can help? 🏆 An Afghan woman reporter, working in secret, has been named the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist of the Year 2024. Her courageous work with The Afghan Times exposes the harsh realities of life under Taliban rule, including severe restrictions placed on women. At the Foreign Press Association Media Awards, her acceptance speech was played to the audience in the room. To protect her safety, we are sharing this silent version of her speech online. It symbolises the risks she faces every day in pursuit of truth.
