This collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and EEP Africa demonstrates the powerful impact of AI-driven geyser devices on energy management. The study showcases how smart geyser management can not only mitigate comeback load following load shedding but also significantly lower maximum demand—more so than situations without load shedding. By intelligently managing energy consumption one can ease the impact of the cost of living crisis by enhancing geyser efficiency by up to 24%. In terms of the Namibia’s Universal Service and Access Policy, Namibia intends to achieve universal access and service in respect of the full range of information and communications technologies, from telephony and broadcasting to Broadband internet. This Universal access and service is a dynamic component of an emerging broadband-enabled economy and a key to promoting Namibia’s societal development and economic growth, enabling infrastructure, content and to reach all in Namibia. Sectional 56 of the Communications Act 8 of 2009 as amended provides for the establishment of the Universal Service Fund. The provision further outlines how the Regulator Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) is auhtorised to set a levy to be paid into the universal service fund through its rule-making procedure. Universal Service Fund provides subsidies and Fees to promote Universal Access to telecommunications. We cannot over-emphasize the importance of telecommunication services for socioeconomic development. IEEE Spectrum has a very interesting issue focused on inventions (https://lnkd.in/ewpzmEbk). Among many interesting findings, one is very relevant, it's getting harder to invent something useful alone. They give the old example of Graham Bell and Thomas Watson, who invented "a cool thing that allowed them to talk between two rooms," a.k.a. a telephone, "but it’s basically a gadget,” according to Eric Hintz. To develop a useful telephone system, they had to set up the R&D structure which later became Bell Labs. And things are naturally much more complicated nowadays. Inventing is getting harder, mainly because there's so much to learn before one can invent something useful in a specialized subject, and not because "everything that can be invented has been invented," as it has been claimed in the late 19th Century. The proof that there is still a lot to be invented is that the WIPO counted 3,5 million filings in 2022 alone. So let´s keep on inventing (and patenting). Maybe before it's too late, as they also have some interesting articles on harnessing AI for inventions ...

The recent paper by Austine Unuriode, Stanley Okoro, Osariemen Tina Ojo - Afolabi, Olalekan M. Durojaiye, Alexander Lopez, Babatunde Yusuf, and Mayowa Akinwande  titled "The Impact of AI on US Labor Markets" explores the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) integration in various industries and its implications for employment in the United States. The study focuses on how AI displaces certain jobs while simultaneously creating new opportunities, especially in AI-related fields. The analysis examines job displacement, job creation, and changes in workforce skill requirements as AI continues to transform the labor market. Three key takeaways: 1. Job Displacement and Creation: AI has a dual effect on the labor market—while it automates routine tasks and displaces jobs (especially in low-skilled or repetitive roles), it also creates new positions, particularly in AI development, data science, and related fields. The demand for AI specialists is growing, and AI-augmented roles (e.g., where humans collaborate with AI systems) are also emerging. 2. Skill Shifts: The widespread adoption of AI necessitates new skills in the workforce, such as digital literacy, data analysis, and AI proficiency. Additionally, as AI takes over routine tasks, higher-order thinking skills like problem-solving, creativity, and adaptability are increasingly in demand. Workers must continuously upskill to remain competitive. 3. Future Implications: The study suggests that while concerns about job displacement due to AI are valid, the future of the labor market could be optimistic if properly managed. AI has the potential to enhance human capabilities and create more opportunities than it displaces, provided that workers adapt through education and training programs. Policymakers must ensure responsible AI integration to mitigate negative consequences like inequality and job loss, while fostering innovation and inclusivity.

The paper "Responsible AI Governance in Africa: Prospects for Outcomes-Based Regulation" advocates for outcomes-based regulation to manage AI's rapid evolution effectively. Unlike rigid prescriptive regulations, this flexible approach promotes innovation by focusing on desired outcomes rather than specific processes. Benefits include adaptability and better risk management, but challenges lie in defining measurable outcomes and sector-specific needs. Recommendations include implementing regulatory sandboxes, engaging stakeholders, and maintaining regulatory agility. The paper underscores this approach's potential to drive socioeconomic development and responsibly harness AI's power while highlighting the need for continuous improvement and capacity building.
