Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Have Date Night at Off-Broadway Opening of Adam Driver's New Play

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are enjoying some live theater together.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, Hanks, 68, and Wilson, 67, posed together at the premiere of Adam Driver's new off-Broadway production Hold on to Me Darling, in which Driver, 40, stars as a country music star who moves back to his hometown following his mother's death. 

Hanks and Wilson, who celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary back in April, were arm-in-arm as they posed for pictures together outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood, where Driver's play is running through Dec. 22.

"On learning of his mother’s death, country music icon Strings McCrane (Driver) finds himself in an existential tailspin. The only way out, he decides, is to abandon superstardom in favor of the simple life, so he moves back to his hometown in Tennessee," reads an official synopsis for playwright Kenneth Lonergan's comedy. "The simple life turns out to be anything but simple in this brilliantly observed tragicomedy, as the consequences of Strings’s success and mind-bending effects of his fame prove all but impossible to outrun."

Hanks and Wilson first met in 1981, but their romance began in earnest when they costarred in the 1985 movie Volunteers, in which they played romantic interests. They made their red carpet debut as a couple in 1986 and married in 1988. The pair share sons Chet Hanks, 34, and Truman Hanks, 28, in addition to Hanks' kids from his first marriage: Colin Hanks, 46, and Elizabeth Hanks, 42.

Wilson, who will turn 68 on Oct. 26, shared a lengthy tribute to Hanks on Instagram as they celebrated the Man Called Otto star's birthday back on July 9.

"🌸🎂🎊 Happy Birthday to my love! 🎊🎂🌸 You made the world a better place the day you were born," she wrote in a caption at the time. "You bring joy wherever you go. You are the bringer of laughs, a lover of vehicles, or pretty much anything, shaped like a round bath tub."

Hanks most recently appeared on the big screen in 2023's Asteroid City and 2024's Freaky Tales. He will next star in the movie Here, which reunites him with his Forrest Gump costar Robin Wright, in theaters Nov. 1. Wilson, a singer and songwriter in addition to actress and producer, recently released a new single titled "Look How Far We've Come."
