On Aug. 16, the artists unleashed their duet and its video, which featured Mars, 38, on the guitar and Gaga sitting piano-side with a cigarette in her mouth. For the visual, the pair matched in denim and red ensembles, as the song itself is reminiscent of Mars' Silk Sonic work from 2021, featuring production from D'Mile ("Leave the Door Open") and additional songwriting from James Fauntleroy. Gaga herself teased "Die with a Smile" one day before by posting a snap in a Bruno Mars t-shirt. The pair later surprised Mars' crowd at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles for the live debut of the collaboration. During the show, Mars called Gaga "pop royalty" as they played to a crowd including the likes of Angela Bassett, Simu Liu, Sophia Bush, Meghan Trainor, Kelsea Ballerini, Jennifer Lopez and Derek Hough. Lady Gaga/Youtube “Bruno and I have a lot of mutual respect for each other and were talking about collaborating," Gaga said in a statement upon the song's release. "I was finishing up my own album in Malibu and one night after a long day he asked me to come to his studio to hear something he was working on." "It was around midnight when I got there and I was blown away when I heard what he had started making," she added. "We stayed up all night and finished writing and recording the song. Bruno’s talent is beyond explanation. His musicianship and vision is next level. There’s no one like him.” Mars added that working with Gaga, who also first found charting success in the late '00s, was an "honor" for him. "She’s an icon and she makes this song magical. I’m so excited for everyone to hear it,” Mars said in his own statement at the time. Close
