Sting Shares His Love for David Bowie: My Wife Trudie Styler and I Felt He 'Actually Blessed Our Baby'

Even though the fellow English crooners had a lot in common, David Bowie managed to leave Sting in awe.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Sting reflects on Bowie’s death at the age of 69 on Sunday. For Sting, 64, the loss of music’s history-making icon brought back a cherished memory he shares with wife Trudie Styler, 62.

“The first time Trudie and I met David was during the Serious Moonlight Tour somewhere in the U.S.,” Sting says of Bowie’s 1983 jaunt. “We were watching the show from the side of the stage, Trudie heavily pregnant with our daughter Mickey.”

Sting continues, “David bounded over to us between songs, kissed Trudie’s bump and asked when she was due. ‘January,’ she said, somewhat taken aback. ‘Ah, a Capricorn like me!” David told us with that irresistible smile of his. ‘I’ve got to get back, I’ll see you later!’ he said, running on stage just in time to catch the first line of ‘Let’s Dance.'”

The sweet gesture left a lasting impression. “We were totally captivated by his energetic charm, his extraordinary music, his art and his unique spirit, and we felt as though he’d actually blessed our baby!” explains Sting. “That was over 30 years ago. We’ve never forgotten it; we will never forget him.”

In the days since Bowie lost his 18-month battle with cancer, the musician’s family – including his wife Iman – have received an outpouring of love from famous friends and fans across the world.
