At COP16 Colombia JNCC’s CEO, Dr Gemma Harper OBE FAcSS, provided the closing remarks at the launch of The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS), hosted by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) at the beautiful Botanic Gardens in Cali, Colombia 🌸 biodiversitystandard.org TGBS is a certification designed to ensure nature-based solutions are protecting, enhancing and restoring biodiversity.  With UK funding, TGBS has been developed by a coalition of global scientific experts, including Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to support the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).      The event was hosted by Professor Peter Wyse Jackson, Missouri Botanical Garden, with inspiring presentations by Carly Cowell, Director Conservation Policy and Practice, BGCI, David Bartholomew, TGBS Project Manager, and Dr Leonardo Salgado, Botanic Gardens of Rio de Janeiro, as well as excellent panel discussions and presentation of the first certifications.     🗣 Gemma wrapped up the event, celebrating the inclusive, collaborative and innovative way in which the certification was developed, highlighting TGBS's message of hope for the future - high nature, low carbon to support implementation of the GBF, and reiterating the importance of nature recovery for net zero as a key message from CBD COP16 to UNFCCC COP29. #COP16Colombia #NatureRecovery #NatureBasedSolutions #GlobalBiodiversityFramework #HighNature #LowCarbon #NetZero #COP29

CIFOR-ICRAF is honored to serve as a technical partner for what stands as the most scientifically rigorous biodiversity certification, designed to recognize, promote, and advance the protection, restoration, and enhancement of biodiversity. The Global Biodiversity Standard addresses a critical challenge in today’s tree-planting programs by ensuring these efforts genuinely support — rather than unintentionally harm — our ecosystems. By establishing clear benchmarks, it guarantees that tree planting, habitat restoration, and agroforestry initiatives not only safeguard biodiversity but actively restore and enhance it. Estamos muy orgullosos del trabajo del equipo de Huarango Nature quien lideró las evaluciones de campo y análisis para los proyectos en Santa Cruz, Bolivia y Nariño, Colombia los cuales lograron las primeras certificaciones del The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS). El trabajo de Sicirec Bolivia ltda, liderado por Anko Stilma y su equipo, financiado por Ecosia , y trabajando de la mano con los propietarios de predios agroforestales ubicados en la Zona de amortiguamiento del Parque Nacional Amboró, demuestra un serio compromiso para mejorar las condiciones para la #biodiversidad a través de una actividad que beneficia a las familias locales. Asimismo, el compromiso de Reforest'Action para financiar proyectos de restauración en la región de Nariño, a través del equipo de Fundación Impulso Verde quienes monitorean las áreas restauradas y llevan a cabo el desarrollo de las capacidades de las comunidades locales, es crucial para amplificar la protección y los resultados positivos para la naturaleza. Cabe resaltar el trabajo de la Asociación Indígena Agroecológica Puma-maki en Guachucal, de la vereda La Ortiga, quienes implementan la siembra y administran el invernadero de plantas nativas, creando a su vez productos, cuyas ventas contribuyen a la sostenibilidad de sus familias. Estaremos participando del lanzamiento oficial del The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS), un innovador programa de certificación y tutoría que evalúa y apoya proyectos de restauración, resaltando resultados positivos para la biodiversidad y las comunidades locales. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de formar parte de este trabajo colaborativo, con expertos a nivel global, liderada por Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Plan Vivo Foundation, TRAFFIC, IUCN Species Survival Commission, Reforest'Action entre otros.
