Info
The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) is a science-based network of thousands of volunteer experts from almost every country of the world, all working together towards achieving the vision of "a just world that values and conserves nature through positive action to reduce the loss of diversity of life on earth". Our more than 10,500 experts work independently and with the IUCN Global Species Programme to build knowledge on the status of species and threats to them, and to provide advice, develop policies and guidelines and facilitate conservation planning. Through this work, SSC catalyses conservation action and enables IUCN to influence policy and assist societies in biodiversity conservation.

📢 A Guide to Getting Started as a National Species Specialist Group! The National Species Specialist Groups aim to bring together efforts at the national level to collaborate in making the best decisions to achieve biodiversity conservation based on the best scientific knowledge available. Its main purpose is not to work with any particular biological group but to help or contribute with other SSC Groups to generate products appropriate to the reality of each country. This guide provides information on getting started as a National Species Specialist Group, including the main steps you need to follow and key documents to explore. 📢The 2023 IUCN SSC Species Survival Report is here! The core contents of this report are the individual accounts of SSC and CSS groups based on the Species Conservation Cycle adopted in 2017, which embraces the full range of activities in five components: assess, plan, act, network, and communicate. Additionally, you will find: 🔹A summary of the work developed by the SSC Chair’s Office under the advice and support received from the Steering Committee, sponsors, and partners. 🔹 An analysis of the targets and activities of SSC and CSS groups derived from the SSC DATA Information System. 🔹 The annual report of the IUCN Secretariat, summarizing their species conservation work. Today, on the International Volunteer Day, we celebrate and recognize the contribution and achievements of the more than 10,000 species experts who volunteer for the SSC. In particular we would like to celebrate the 14 SSC experts and 50 SSC groups for their outstanding performance in the implementation of components of the species conservation cycle. Realizing that the voluntary contributions of these experts often pass with little formal notice, the SSC has established an awards system to more publicly recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of its membership. You can find more information about the SSC Awards and 2024 awardees in this web article: https://lnkd.in/enYK5n4q #WeAreSSC #ConservationWorks #SpeciesConservation #IVD2024

The IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group (SSG) has published a status report on sharks, rays and chimaeras, nearly 20 years after its first report warned that sharks were threatened but underrepresented in conservation. Key highlights: ✴️ This report updates our understanding, and the scope of information reflects the scale of these two decades of change. ✴️ The breadth of research topics has expanded, mirroring the inclusion of a greater diversity of species, and attention is being trained on the emerging threats and the accelerating global changes to aquatic ecosystems. ✴️ The 2005 report heralded a sea change for sharks, rays and chimaeras, whose historical obscurity in policy, conservation and fisheries management was a serious concern. In this report, the increased focus that was called for is now apparent in the scale of work happening across the planet. 📢 Announcement! The IUCN SSC CEC Behaviour Change Task Force is proud to announce the publication of a compelling new review article in the journal Annual Review of Environment and Resources. Entitled “Changing Human Behaviour to Conserve Biodiversity”, the article is a comprehensive review of the most substantive work on behaviour change for biodiversity conservation across various threats, stakeholder groups, and communication strategies. Key highlights of the article include: ✴️ An exploration of how changing human actions can mitigate major threats to biodiversity, including pollution, climate change, invasive species, and human disturbances. ✴️ Effective strategies for influencing different groups to adopt conservation-friendly behaviours. ✴️ Identification of key gaps in the design and implementation of behaviour change interventions for biodiversity conservation. The most iconic things in life are not things❗ The IUCN Red List is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity. Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyze action for biodiversity conservation and policy change, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. It provides information about range, population size, habitat and ecology, use and/or trade, threats, and conservation actions that will help inform necessary conservation decisions. We’ve teamed up with IUCN Red List to preserve #IconicSpecies, the important animals, plants, and fungi that showcase the remarkable biodiversity of different habitats. 👉 Donate now to support the IUCN Red List: https://lnkd.in/epFE7qW #WeAreSSC #ConservationWorks
