I asked our friend Bram to give his best tactic of using Catalog Ads - here is his response 🙌💃💪 We all know that the true power of running dynamic catalog ads is '𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞'. By embracing liquidity and targeting broader audiences, Meta may deliver relevant ads to audiences most likely to be interested and take action. This also means that Meta will dynamically retarget people that have expressed interest in specific items from your catalog. Let's build on this principle and take it one step further. On top of your existing Advantage+ Shopping campaigns, set up a dedicated retargeting funnel that attracts new (top-of-the-funnel) audiences and follows up with catalog ads that show highly relevant items from your catalog. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩: Create a new 'Video Views' campaign containing video ads of people using/wearing specific products/clothes. Target these ads to a broad audience (at least 2 million people). Now create a video views custom audience where you isolate views of these specific video ads where people watched at least 50% of its duration. Now create a separate purchase-optimized Sales campaign where you exclusively target the retargeting segment of people who shown interest in your product video. Set up specific catalog ads that feature exactly the same products that were used/shown in your video. Let's say you created a video of someone wearing a specific outfit from your latest collection. Create a catalog segment containing all the exact products from that specific outfit and run these as catalog ads to your specific retargeting segment. People will remember seeing these products/clothes in a video and are now more likely to actually buy them. And as you are now using a video views campaign, you're building new audiences on-platform, expanding your reach towards new audiences. 𝐌𝐲 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 (𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬): I think Bram hits the nail on the head here (as he always does). Most advertisers are seeing powerful results with Catalog Ads in a broad campaign, but then don't do the extra work of using Catalog Ads in more specialized ways. Catalog Ads is the most powerful ad format we currently have on making people buy - so you should use it in more ways, to make sure people buy. Mix high quality content with Catalog Ads - like Bram advises here, by showing great videos and retargeting with the exact products afterwards. Or show the products below, in a Collection ad. Or show the products below your influencer post, with Meta's new Partnership ads. We use LangChain as our OS, allowing us to evaluate, improve, and deploy updates almost daily. Feedback is essential; all team members share insights in a dedicated Slack channel, and we analyze each campaign’s results. 5️⃣ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐭 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 = 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 + 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬: A completely new discipline that, for us, combines the creativity of a content marketer with the abstract, logical thinking of a developer. How do you break down creativity into rules? It took time for us to understand and cultivate this skill across the team (and its still in process …) 6️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐍𝐨 “𝐎𝐧𝐞-𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥-𝐅𝐢𝐭𝐬-𝐀𝐥𝐥”: We currently use GPT-4 for high-quality content, AI at Meta’s Llama 3 on Groq’s ultra-fast LPUs for tasks that need high inference speed, and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku for large inputs. However, we continuously adapt these models to our needs. 7️⃣ 𝐋𝐋𝐌𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐝𝐥𝐲: The speed at which models develop means we’re constantly iterating. With LangChain, we can plug-and-play new LLMs, testing them A/B with large datasets. What wasn’t feasible yesterday often becomes possible tomorrow. For us, Groq’s inference speed has been a game changer. 8️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬: We often don’t see an impact that justifies switching to the latest versions right away. 9️⃣ 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞: First, we hosted our own models, but the maintenance was high. Now, we integrate almost all LLMs via leading platforms, which lets us iterate faster. With "tokens-as-a-service" model, we benefit from flexible costs, scaling as needed without heavy upfront investments. 🔟 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭: In the beginning, we made great progress with a Python developer and a prompt engineer. Tools like LangChain, open-source LLMs, and providers like Hugging Face & Groq make it easy to build your own apps with minimal resources and no big setup costs. #ai #langchain #groq #huggingface

That's why I am sharing one of my favorite scripts: 🚩 Google Ads Script for 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐔𝐑𝐋: (link in comments) 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬: The script checks all the entries in the Google Ads change history of your account, and if there is a change by a user outside of your list of 'recognized' users, you will get an alert via email. The alert mail contains the number of changes and a link to the Google Sheet that lists all changes by unrecognized users. 👉 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞: It is all too often people outside your team make changes to the Google Ads accounts you manage. How being nosy got us 50 backlinks? Back in 2022, when we were promoting our E-Learning Statistics piece for Studocu | Studeersnel.nl, we kept noticing a stat being mentioned in almost every article we read: According to a study from The Research Institute of America, eLearning increases student retention from 25 to 60%. It was cited by all the major publishers. We tried to find the original source but kept failing. Something felt off. After going full detective mode, guess what? The Research Institute of America doesn’t exist… sort of. It exists, but it’s not a research institution publishing peer-reviewed research. It's a technology-based training and financial information vendor.  It gets worse: the study was not ‘recent’—it is at least 24 years old and predates e-learning as we know it today. The “study” was not a peer-reviewed academic research study. It was simply a white paper written by a group of investment analysts. The cherry on top? In the late 1990s, the RIA announced the release of their OnPoint System, a new CD-ROM-based program designed to assist those interested in tax information. They were likely pushing this stat to increase their CD-ROM-based program sales. This was a gold mine to us. Now, all that was left was to find the updated stat and pitch publishers to update it. But, this was trickier than we thought. There was no single eligible study out there that explicitly stated the e-learning retention rate for students. So, we had to be creative and come up with a solution. We analyzed over 20 individual e-learning retention rate case studies with a participation pool of over 250,000 participants. We found out that the average e-learning knowledge retention rate from those case studies was around 82%. Now, we had everything we needed. We wrote an email with our findings, reached out to websites citing the misleading information, and asked them to update it using our source. The links kept coming passively (and still do to this day). This is the magic of statistics link building. It allows you to be creative and come up with solutions to get amazing backlinks - all for free.

Otherwise PMax will present blended performance data consisting partly of high-quality traffic that would and should have come your way via other campaigns. You can then leave PMax to work with the ‘outer edges’ of inventory that you are not already serving with greater focus in other campaign types, and judge it accordingly. If it can produce incremental conversions in that space at an acceptable ROAS/CPA - then it truly adds value. Recommended actions like trawling your PMax search terms for high-value phrases to then add as exact-match keywords, and excluding your brand from PMax, to serve brand terms instead via search and shopping, are in tune with that general principle. *Search themes for core terms go squarely against it.*”

The best agencies run off a far better metric: Contribution Margin (CM) Here’s the easiest way to get started: Step 1 – Start measuring CM (or some proxy like below). E.g., Net Sales * Gross Margin – Ad Spend If it’s not going up, your ad partner isn’t performing. Step 2 – Measure CM on a category and SKU level.
