Until October 7, 2023, DDR&D worked with around 206 Israeli startup companies, and today, following the war, the number has risen to 272 companies. As a result of the war, the Israeli defense industry and defense-tech companies have been at the forefront. A recent article I wrote for Calcalist כלכליסט explains how we can leverage the significant investments made in defense industries and their outstanding achievements for environmental sustainability and overcoming climate change. Dual-use technology refers to technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes, thereby maximizing the advantages of advanced technologies. A drone is a great example of dual-use technology – on one hand, it can be used for military surveillance, and on the other hand, it can also be used to monitor climate-related changes such as methane and other GHG emissions monitoring, weather patterns, etc. In the article, I provided more examples of dual-use technologies, including satellite technologies and green transportation. Defense industries and Israeli defense-tech companies can play a central role in dual-use technology. Investing in dedicated bodies like Capital Nature can provide the necessary network and market access for these technologies. Our own Avi Tel-Or, CTO of Intel Ignite Tel-Aviv, spoke at #ChipEx2024 about the state of Israel's semiconductor startup ecosystem. His conclusion: there is a great opportunity to reignite Israel’s Semicon startup scene. Take a look at Avi’s key takeaways: 📍 Israeli startups have played a pivotal role in the global semiconductor industry, bringing major players to our shores. Intel itself has expanded its activity in Israel based on startups, acquiring 13 Israeli based startups over the years. 🌎 The pipeline of new semiconductor startups in Israel is dwindling, with only one new semiconductor startup founded last year. This is particularly concerning when we see it’s not a global trend. Compared to Europe, the US, and the UK, Israel lags in semiconductor startup growth. 📉 Over the years the focus in Israel has shifted dramatically to SaaS and cybersecurity, with 80% of exits last year in cybersecurity. This shift has led to a stark imbalance in our tech ecosystem. 💡 SW-HW Synergy is essential: Semiconductor startups must understand the broader ecosystem, from AI models to cloud applications and beyond. Software startups – developing AI models to cloud applications, and beyond – should be in close collaboration with hardware designers. A balanced investment across domains is essential to maintain Israel’s global tech hub status. ⚙️ There are very good reasons to invest and build semiconductors in Israel. Silicon is at the heart of a new economy that Intel Corporation’s CEO Pat Gelsinger calls "Siliconomy," with semiconductors enabling modern economies. We’re seeing a breakthrough in AI, where applications are justifying new roadmaps of silicon. Intel alone is investing $25 billion in semiconductor infrastructure in Israel. 🔑 Israel has 8% of the global semiconductor talent and deep expertise across all stages. Collaboration with tech giants, VC support, and an active innovation authority offer unique advantages. Avi implores founders, VCs, and corporates to dream big. Israeli tech is at a crossroads On the one hand, we see a surge in tech, particularly with AI. On the other hand, we're dealing with a decrease in economic activity and a potential shift in the job market While it's true that the current situation in the country has led to a decrease in economic activity, we must also consider the impact of AI on the job market. Companies may be using the current economic climate as a cover to transition to AI-driven operations, a move that isn't typically popular… The rapid development of AI, such as OpenAI's GPT-3, suggests that we may see a big shift in the job market sooner than anticipated. While this is great for efficiency, it also raises concerns about job security, and the future of jobs Furthermore, the job market, especially in the tech sector, is becoming increasingly competitive There are fewer jobs than there are people looking for work. This issue is particularly pronounced in the Haredi community, where job opportunities are even scarcer. The community faces additional challenges, including bias and a lack of experience. Most training programs today don't offer job experience or placement, leaving individuals to navigate the job market on their own Given these circumstances, #entrepreneurship emerges as a viable path… knowing how to run a business and possessing skills that can't be easily replicated by AI can be a real advantage Along with those challenges, another major question is… is Israel a conducive environment for setting up a business?   The Israeli government's stance towards businesses, particularly #startups, plays a big role in shaping the country's economic landscape. High taxes and stringent regulations can deter entrepreneurs, pushing them to relocate their businesses to countries like the US This trend is worrying… as startups and new businesses are the key drivers of economic growth. A decrease in the number of companies not only reduces job opportunities but also hampers growth The government's role in fostering a supportive environment for businesses cannot be overstated Initiatives to ease regulations, provide tax cuts, and offer support can significantly enhance the business landscape, encouraging entrepreneurs to establish and grow their businesses in Israel While it's true that thriving businesses may not always equate to more jobs, particularly because of #AI, they do contribute to economic growth. The profits generated by these businesses can be reinvested into the economy, catalyzing further growth The next few years in this country are about striking a balance between embracing tech, entrepreneurship, and ensuring job security, as well as creating an environment conducive for building businesses What are your thoughts on this? What an inspiring morning we had yesterday! Maya Schwartz, CEO of the Israeli High-Tech Association, launched the SHE tech conference by Supersonas, which was held at KLA in Migdal HaEmek. Maya highlighted the current situation of the high-tech industry during this challenging period and the presence of women in the high-tech sector, which has even more significant challenges. Did you know that: • Women lead less than 10% of startups founded in the last decade. • Less than 5% of the capital raisings are done by women and with less money for startups, especially in the early stages. • As investment rounds increase, the proportion of women decreases. Our collaboration with Supersonas is very significant for us. The Israeli High-Tech Association is working to promote the presence of women in key positions within the Israeli high-tech sector. New breakthrough from researchers at Tel Aviv University: Smartwatches that prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Researchers from Tel Aviv University have conducted a large-scale study using smartwatches to detect early signs of COVID-19 and flu before symptoms appear. The team, led by Prof. Dan Yamin and Prof. Erez Shmueli from the Department of Industrial Engineering, anticipates the next breakthroughs in early detection of migraine attacks and glucose levels. NeuReality Raises $20 Million From European Innovation Council Fund NeuReality, an Israeli startup, raised $20 million from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund, Varana Capital, Cleveland Avenue, XT Hi-Tech and OurCrowd to make AI data centers faster and cheaper. NeuReality developed an AI-centric system architecture that enables companies to run generative AI applications and large language models (LLMs) without overinvesting in scarce and underutilized graphics processing units (GPUs). The investment from the side of the EIC Fund, the venture arm of the European Commission’s EIC Accelerator program, addresses the 2 important industries for Europe, that are expected to be major drivers of economic growth in the coming years – advanced semiconductors and AI.
