International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO

Credible data is needed to deliver on the world’s #methane opportunity. At COP29 Azerbaijan, IMEO will convene high-level representatives across government, industry and civil society to spotlight data-driven solutions to #CutMethane and drive climate action. ➡ Hosted by the Government of Germany and the European Commission, this ministerial will take stock of progress tapping a methane #data revolution to enable action at speed and scale to achieve the goals of the #GlobalMethanePledge. 🔺 As a core implementer of the Global Methane Pledge, UN Environment Programme’s IMEO exists to provide open, reliable, and actionable data to the individuals with the agency to reduce emissions. At #COP29, governments and a coalition of NGOs announced the #Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap.    This collaborative effort, joined by the European Commission, Canada, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US and NGOs, aims to accelerate action toward achieving global methane reduction targets.    The roadmap outlines clear, actionable steps that must supported by credible data and robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks—based on IMEO’s work including the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0—to ensure transparency and effectiveness.   We’re committed to empowering governments, companies, and stakeholders with the data they need to identify targeted solutions, scale up impactful efforts, and track meaningful progress. We are pleased to welcome Cairn Oil and Gas, Vedanta Limited, the first Indian company to join UN Environment Programme’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0. OGMP 2.0 is UNEP’s flagship #methane reporting and mitigation programme, and is the only comprehensive, measurement-based framework for the sector.  Cairn joins a growing community of practice of over 140 members committed to transparency and collaboration in tackling methane emissions. 🌍 Its membership brings the first upstream assets operated in #India into the initiative, doubling OGMP 2.0 coverage to cover one-fourth of Indian oil and gas production. We hope that Cairn’s leadership will inspire more companies from India and beyond to follow in their footsteps, driving greater methane transparency and action. Head of UNEP's IMEO, Manfredi Caltagirone, delivered a special video address at the 29th International Conference and Expo "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" #OGT2024, held from October 23-25.   Remarks emphasized the following:   🟢 The critical role #methane plays as a powerful greenhouse gas, responsible for at least one-third of the global warming we face today.   ➡️ How UN Environment Programme's IMEO is partnering with the government of #Turkmenistan to catalyze action and deliver transparent, science-based methane emissions reductions.   ➡️ How IMEO's Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) leverages cutting-edge #satellite technology to monitor methane emissions, enabling swift mitigation actions. ℹ️ Since June 2024, nearly 300 methane emission events have been detected in Turkmenistan alone, offering a clear opportunity to drive change.   ➡️ Through further collaboration, Turkmenistan can tap into the present opportunity for global methane #mitigation, showcasing its commitment to achieving the objectives of the #ParisAgreement.

Excited to share the success of the 'Strategic Workshop on Designing the IMEO #Methane Emissions Measurement Campaign in Colombia,' held at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) from October 3-4.   Organized by UN Environment Programme’s IMEO, the workshop explored methane measurement techniques tailored to #Colombia's unique emission sources, with the ultimate goal of supporting an IMEO Baseline Study. In collaboration with #UNAL, here are some key highlights:   📊 Active Engagement: The interactive opening session sparked insightful discussions on how government stakeholders can leverage methane data to drive mitigation actions. Participants from prioritized sectors were actively engaged, leading to meaningful exchanges. 🔍 Focused Roundtables: Roundtable discussions honed in on measurement strategies for key methane sources like enteric fermentation, landfills, wastewater treatment plants, coal mining, dams, and residential gas networks. Moderators presented key findings, shaping next steps for effective #MethaneMeasurement. 🤝 Collaboration in Action: This workshop brought together leaders from industry, government, and academia, building a strong community committed to advancing methane science and using data to #mitigate emissions. 🔬 IMEO Baseline Study: IMEO’s multi-sector approach aims to fill critical methane #data gaps, providing a comprehensive understanding of emissions and bridging scientific knowledge with regional expertise.
