Reducing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow global warming as we decarbonize, but the world needs empirical data to enable climate action at scale. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is harnessing a methane data revolution by putting open, reliable, and actionable data directly into the hands of individuals with the power to reduce emissions. Methane data is critical for closing the emissions gap by focusing mitigation efforts and tracking progress over time. Situated at the centre of the world’s methane data ecosystem, IMEO collects, synthesizes, and publishes data from its Methane Science Studies; from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS); through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0); and from national emissions inventories. IMEO is a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge – which is a global effort by over 150 countries, led by the EU and US, to reduce global methane emissions 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels.

At #COP29, governments and a coalition of NGOs announced the #Methane Abatement Partnership Roadmap. This collaborative effort, joined by the European Commission, Canada, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US and NGOs, aims to accelerate action toward achieving global methane reduction targets. The roadmap outlines clear, actionable steps that must supported by credible data and robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks—based on IMEO’s work including the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0—to ensure transparency and effectiveness. We are pleased to welcome Cairn Oil and Gas, Vedanta Limited, the first Indian company to join UN Environment Programme’s Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0. OGMP 2.0 is UNEP’s flagship #methane reporting and mitigation programme, and is the only comprehensive, measurement-based framework for the sector. Cairn joins a growing community of practice of over 140 members committed to transparency and collaboration in tackling methane emissions. 🌍 Its membership brings the first upstream assets operated in #India into the initiative, doubling OGMP 2.0 coverage to cover one-fourth of Indian oil and gas production. Head of UNEP's IMEO, Manfredi Caltagirone, delivered a special video address at the 29th International Conference and Expo "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan" #OGT2024, held from October 23-25. Excited to share the success of the 'Strategic Workshop on Designing the IMEO #Methane Emissions Measurement Campaign in Colombia,' held at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) from October 3-4. Organized by UN Environment Programme’s IMEO, the workshop explored methane measurement techniques tailored to #Colombia's unique emission sources, with the ultimate goal of supporting an IMEO Baseline Study. In collaboration with #UNAL, here are some key highlights: 📊 Active Engagement: The interactive opening session sparked insightful discussions on how government stakeholders can leverage methane data to drive mitigation actions. Participants from prioritized sectors were actively engaged, leading to meaningful exchanges. 🔍 Focused Roundtables: Roundtable discussions honed in on measurement strategies for key methane sources like enteric fermentation, landfills, wastewater treatment plants, coal mining, dams, and residential gas networks.
