N₂O, a super pollutant, is the third most important greenhouse gas and most significant ozone-layer depleting substance emitted today. Ambitious action could reduce emissions by more than 40% with benefits for climate, the ozone layer and air quality. Tropospheric ozone is one of the super pollutants driving half of global warming 🤯🌎 Yet dedicated action to reduce it is absent from the climate policy agenda at a global, regional, and country level. Reducing tropospheric ozone has untapped potential to mitigate the impact of human-induced #ClimateChange. It could also deliver cleaner air, reduce premature deaths and save billions in economic costs. Read our new policy brief with Clean Air Institute, Clean Air Task Force and Hill Consulting ⬇️ #COP29 #ClimateAction https://bit.ly/3Z9l8rp

🌡️ As extreme heat events intensify, National Cooling Action Plans #NCAPs are emerging as a global best practice for sustainable, equitable cooling. Join us at the #COP29 in the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion (G10) for a side event National Cooling Actions Plans (NCAPs): Delivering Climate-Friendly Cooling, co-organised by the UN Environment Programme Cool Coalition, United Nations ESCAP , Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. 💡 Discover how NCAPs drive sustainable cooling solutions through passive cooling, energy efficiency, and reducing climate-warming refrigerants - and learn how these strategies align with national and global agendas to deliver impactful results. 🎤 Hear from leading experts in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and MENA regions as they share their experiences in: ✅ Developing and implementing NCAPs ✅ Attracting climate finance for cooling initiatives ✅ Collaborating with the private sector to drive sustainable solutions 🔎 Learn more about the NCAP Methodology: https://lnkd.in/dqDD-izX 🖐️ Join the Buildings and Cooling Pavilion events: https://lnkd.in/ew6ZwyGS #BuildingCoolingPavilion #BuildForClimate #ActOnCooling

Nitrous oxide is currently the most significant ozone-layer depleting substance being emitted into the atmosphere. The Global Nitrous Oxide Assessment shows that proactively tackling N₂O would also support the continued recovery of the ozone layer, helping to avoid a future in which much of the global population is exposed to harmful UV levels. A new FAO-UN Environment Programme- Climate & Clean Air Coalition and The International Nitrogen Management System (INMS) report launched at #COP29 warns that Nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions are rising faster than expected. Immediate action is required to curb the environmental & health impacts of this super pollutant. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dkbXEDXz

The non-CO2 super climate pollutants — #methane, hydrofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, & tropospheric ozone—are responsible for half of the warming we experience today. Cutting them is the single best and fastest strategy to reduce temperatures over the critical next decade. These pollutants have long been ignored and underrepresented. Less than 5% of climate finance is dedicated to their mitigation. We need to bake in awareness AND action on the non-CO2 climate pollutants to our global consciousness if we are to have any chance of keeping 1.5C within or reach, or to limit overshoot. Join Richard Duke, Head of the Climate & Clean Air Coalition Martina Otto, and David Kanter to learn more about the other half of warming. Without urgent action on rising N₂O emissions, there is no viable pathway to limiting global warming to 1.5°C and providing tangible tools to reduce emissions by more than 40% from current levels. #COP29’s focus on climate finance must unlock #financing for methane mitigation from #solid waste. Today just 2% of #climate #finance goes to #methane #mitigation (Reuters 2023). Of that, a tiny proportion goes to #waste management, and of that an even tinier proportion goes to organics recycling – US$3.9bn goes to incineration vs a mere US$22m on #organics #recycling including #biogas, despite #organics representing over 50% of municipal solid waste in most countries. Critically, 2.7bn people today lack any formal waste collection (UNEP 2024). Yet recycling the 105bn tonnes of organic wastes humans generate every year (#foodwaste, #sewage, #manures and slurries, other agri-wastes, commercial/industrial wastes) through #biogas would deliver 50% of the Global Methane Pledge, reducing global temperature rise by a critical 0.1 degree Celsius. And generating sufficient biogas to displace one third of today’s fossil gas consumption. Today the World Biogas Association hosted its first #COP29 official side event entitled “Unlocking the Potential for Financing Methane Mitigation from Solid Waste for the NDCs and Beyond”, where we presented our G20 paper (https://lnkd.in/ekxfpFgh) on the same topic, co-authored by the ISWA International Solid Waste Association and TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, in which we made two main recommendations: 1. Valorisation of Methane Abatement 2. Targeting Climate Finance to Financing Waste Collection and Treatment that prioritise high in waste hierarchy activities. With thanks to our panellists Martina Otto, Head of Secretariat of the Climate & Clean Air Coalition, Anja Schwetje, Vice Chair, Climate Change and Waste Management Working Group, ISWA International Solid Waste Association, Alfredo Miranda-González, Deputy Director for International Methane, Clean Air Task Force, Janek Vähk, Zero Pollution Manager, Zero Waste Europe, and our panel chair Pradeep Monga Ph.D. The COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency will launch the first ever Declaration on Methane Reduction on organic wastes, which sets a precedent for other countries to follow, building the political commitment that can lead to unlocking the finances needed to build the necessary waste collection, treatment and energy infrastructure to turn these waste resources into #value. The WBA has developed its model Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme for countries to adapt to their local environment, creating the necessary enabling environment to facilitate the development of bankable biogas projects. #MakingBiogasHappen.

“Low- and middle-income countries make up two-thirds of the top methane emitters in the energy sector. But barriers exist for many of them to rapid development and implementation of methane policies for oil and gas methane.” CATF’s Jonathan Banks comments on $6.5 million of new funding pledged from the UK to the Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme today at #COP29. The programme will help countries #CutMethane pollution from their oil, gas, and coal sectors, with support from the Climate & Clean Air Coalition and Clean Air Task Force. https://lnkd.in/ei4NUkfA
