What are the most effective B2B market segmentation strategies?
One of the most important questions to ask yourself when reaching out to customers is "why now?". Why should a customer need your product now - what's the urgency? To identify this, you need to look at events, internal as well as external. Think of news articles, internal changes like hires, leavers or restructuring, announcements about new products, funding, or opening new markets, and so on. If you can identify a common pattern amongst your customers about what changed in their company that made them ready to buy, then this can be incredibly valuable when targeting new potential customers. This could be called Event-based segmentation.

Firmographic Segmentation is often the first thing people think about when defining segments, but it's also one that comes with many flaws. Industry categories for example, one of the most commonly used selectors, bundle completely different companies into one. The category software might include a company in consumer finance, in healthcare technology, and a CRM. Another common selector, employee size, has its own issues. One 200 people company can look very different from the next. What gives better results is to look at what companies actually sell, to whom, and what their org structure looks like. There are tools that allow you to do this but the most commonly used ones unfortunately do not.

What are the most effective B2B market segmentation strategies?
A trending topic in B2B behavioral segmentation has been Intent data. There are different kinds. For example first party Intent data refers to any interactions a potential customer has with your website or product that indicates their intent or interest. Third party Intent data would include information that some employees of a potential customer have recently done research on a topic that fits with your offering - let's say you sell antivirus software and they looked into "cyber security". In both of these cases, you have clear reason to believe that there is something to discuss with this customer and hence this kind of segmentation can be very valuable.

What are the most effective B2B market segmentation strategies?
Needs-based segmentation is especially important if your company serves multiple use cases or even products. A customer that comes in with needs that match Use Case A will need to be treated very differently from a customer with needs that match Use Case B in all parts of the customer journey. However needs-based segmentation by itself is not sufficient to understand your market. It would still need to be combined with other types of segmentation to define a more actionable segment that you can use to for example drive more demand for your solution.
