About finding the right people in the right place... Recently, I had a conversation with a Chief HR Officer looking for the next generation of leaders to elevate his company. I suggested exploring the Bayer 04 Leverkusen case for insights. In November 2021, during a visit to BayArena, Fernando Carro de Prada shared his vision: "Soon Bayer 04 Leverkusen will win the Bundesliga International GmbH." Back then, it seemed like a lofty goal, but Fernando's strategic leadership and professional structuring have proved successful, emphasizing the importance of placing the right individuals in key roles. Fernando and Simon Rolfes exemplify effective teamwork, mutual respect, and long-term vision with mid-term results. Their collaborative approach highlights the significance of shared values and a cohesive vision within any organization. Notably, Xabier Alonso, a young Coach with extensive experience, showcases that one's early 40s can be the optimal career phase to push boundaries and strive for excellence. A few weeks ago, my coaching mentor, Carla Manas, ICF-PCC, invited me to discuss #personalbrand with the latest cohort of coaches from the Center for Executive Coaching. Leaders often hesitate about creating their branding, associating it with celebrities and influencers. However, a strong personal brand is crucial for showcasing our value and connecting with those who need our help. Developing a #personalbrand involves gaining clarity of your beliefs and purpose, and ensuring their consistent alignment with our actions. This process is intentional, not accidental. Consider these three aspects when crafting your #personalbrand: 🔸 PAIN - Follow not your passion, but your heartbreak. Your pain points, regrets, and failures often reveal your aspirations. What hurt you or others that you wish to end? 🔸 PURPOSE - Start with WHY. A strong sense of purpose provides motivation to do what you are meant to do, no matter the challenges. What is your #Ikigai, the reason you get up in the morning? 🔸 PEOPLE - Understand the people you aim to serve, acknowledging that regardless of your work or product, you are in the service industry. Who will be left suffering or challenged without your service or leadership? In my recent interview with Sabina Peskin, she asked a question that I often hear: How did my background in biology shape my approach to work? This is a question I've received many times, in interviews, from co-workers, as an author and consultant. Most are skeptical or confused about the value a background in biology can bring to a business setting. But I view my biology background as a critical component of my business success. The problems we see are rarely isolated. What we see is often a symptom of an underlying issue. I learned this while studying Ecology as an undergrad and while researching the ability of plants to remove particulate matter (causes asthma and other health issues) from indoor air for my Master's thesis. This directly applies to the business world. We see a symptom - think of that employee who is underperforming - and make a quick assumption - that employee can't do the job. But the reality is often much more complex. That employee might actually be very well equipped to thrive in his role, but an unseen factor is inhibiting his best work. Maybe he's dealing with a challenge in his personal life, is fearful because of previous work experience or might need a simple change to his working environment. My biology background helped me pause and try to uncover the source of a problem, not to simply assume based on the first symptoms I see. When we take the time to uncover the true problem, we... 👉🏽 ensure others are heard and well supported 👉🏽 save time that would have otherwise been wasted solving the wrong problem 👉🏽 create happier teams that drive better business outcomes #psychologicalsafety #problemsolving
