Spain scores again ⚽, not just a trophy but also MG's new EV plant!⬇ ⚙️ SAIC Motor Corp's MG brand is considering building its first EV plant in Europe, eyeing Galicia, Spain, as the potential location. This plant aims to produce EVs for various European markets, with a decision expected by September 30. 📅 The target for producing the first vehicle at this European plant is set for the fourth quarter of 2027. Besides Spain, other potential locations include Hungary and the Czech Republic, where labor costs are more favorable. 🌍 One key goal for MG's European plant is to circumvent tariffs on EVs imported from China. These tariffs, recently increased by the European Commission, include a provisional countervailing duty of 37.6% on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China, in addition to the original 10% rate. 📢 MG has strongly opposed these tariffs, arguing they violate fair competition and free trade principles. The arrangement would offer Uber drivers access to favorable pricing, insurance, financing, and other services for BYD vehicles. Plans call for the partnership to expand to the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. They also intend to collaborate in introducing autonomous-capable EVs on the Uber platform. BYD - China’s largest EV maker - has been rapidly expanding its reach into world markets after switching entirely to production of EVs and hybrids in 2022. The rapid emergence of low-priced EVs from China is shaking up the global auto industry in ways not seen since Japanese makers arrived during the oil crises of the 1970s. The European Union imposed provisional duties on Chinese electric vehicles in June, alleging that government subsidies give automakers in China an unfair advantage. From the Business Development Desk of Enrique Lopez Market trends for EV trucks - Transmission, Direct drive or e-axle?? Hello everyone, this time I want to share some insight of the trends we are seeing on our customer's designs and requirements.       More transmissions, less direct drive systems.   - In consequence off technical reasons we've discussed in previous posts, we're seeing an increase in proportion of 2-speed transmissions vs single reducers and direct drive systems. Furthermore, we are seeing increased interest from specialized customers in 3 and 4-speed transmissions.   Possible reasons - As more vehicle testing and field data is available every day, there is an increased awareness about the advantages of motor and transmission vs direct drive systems.   - Total ownership cost: Transmissions have always been a protection for motors and engines from axle and differential loads and shocks; Lack of them, sooner than later passes the bill onto motors. Bearings, shafts, and cooling systems are among the most common failures in direct drive systems, and, while transmissions have some of that, the costs of repair and maintenance on transmissions are way lower than motors.   - Total system price tag: Is no secret that in order to perform on medium and heavy trucks, the size of a direct drive motor must be considerable larger than motor-transmission systems. While it's true that in most cases the cost of the larger motor is still lower than the motor-transmission system, the total vehicle cost is lower since transmission allows for lower Amps used to start moving the vehicle and better efficiency at highway speed, which enables the vehicle to do the same job with a smaller battery.   -Location and vehicle design flexibility: Motor-transmission system is usually about 30% smaller in diameter than equivalent direct drive motor, this is small enough to fit safe between the main frame of most trucks and with much better ground clearance. This translates in fewer motors damaged due to ground clearance and exposure to road rocks and debris.    - Transmission allows for smoother motor operation reducing peak RPM and peak torque time, thus reducing Amp buzz and high pitch noise.     e-Axles are here to stay but not so sure they will dominate the EV market as some have prognosticated.   - while e-axles have been a good solution for many class 7 and 8 trucks, some owners are facing the higher costs in wheels and shock absorbers due to increased weight in the axle. Also, relatively simple maintenance issues are hard to solve by the in-house mechanic and tend to be expensive.   Exposure to road conditions and objects are proving costly; Accidents happen, a rock or a board in the road, lousy reverse driving skills and poor road conditions are among the causes of many reported damages to e-axles. In addition, despite rigorous testing, still the road manages to damage components and electronics.

Eaton expands commercial vehicle transmission portfolio Eaton will display a number of transmissions for traditional and electrified commercial vehicles at IAA Transportation, September 17–22, in Hanover, Germany. Introduced earlier this year to the Brazilian market, the new Advantor series of automated manual transmissions (AMTs) are designed for commercial vehicles with internal combustion engines (ICEs). Advantor AMTs leverage Eaton’s long history of innovation and reliability in automated transmission technology. The Eaton Advantor automated manual transmission (AMT) is designed for commercial vehicles with internal combustion engines. (Illustration: Eaton) “The Advantor series has many product features that bus and truck manufactures globally will find attractive, particularly in emerging markets such as South America and Asia-Pacific regions,” said Marcos Janasi, business unit director, Commercial Powertrain, Eaton’s Mobility Group. “Our new transmission series is designed to deliver significant fuel efficiency and enhanced performance across a variety of vehicle duty cycles, and to provide reliability and ease of service.” Several versions of the Advantor AMT will be available in the next 24 months, including the Advantor-6, which was developed for the light-duty truck and bus segment; the Advantor-8, which targets the medium-duty bus market; and other versions to meet the needs of the broader commercial truck market. The Advantor series leverages common components to reduce complexity, improve serviceability, and to deliver a better driving experience.
