💡 Enifer, a Finnish biotech start-up, has raised €36 million to build a facility for its 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻, PEKILO, intended for human and pet food. The plant will be operational by late 2025 with a 3,000-ton annual capacity. We are happy to be part of this new research project which is jointly launched with The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) and other food industry actors. The project is starting to identify the variety-specific characteristics of oats and faba beans and investigate their suitability as a raw material for various food products like plant-based yoghurts, oat bread, and more. The project is part of Valio’s Food 2.0 leading company program and is funded by Business Finland, food industry actors and the Natural Resources Institute Finland. 🌾 💡 “Understanding raw materials is key to high-quality products,” says Saara Pöyri, VP Technology and Product Development at Valio. The aim is to develop the characteristics of oat and faba bean varieties with new genomic breeding technologies. Austria's new dietary guidelines in favour of plant-based nutrition! Just recently, the Ministry for Social and Health Affairs in Austria published the updated dietary guidelines: More plants - less meat, fish and dairy products. This is a great step in the right direction to promote more sustainable food systems, and we at PAN welcome this development. In addition to health aspects, environmental and climate aspects have now also been incorporated. Federal minister Joachim Rauch said: "A conscious diet with a focus on vegetables, fruit, cereals and pulses is not only good for the planet, it also helps us live longer and healthier lives." With a diet focused on whole, plant-based foods, we can promote human and planetary health. The more decision-makers recognise this, the closer we get to the goal of healthy and sustainable food systems. 🇪🇺 European fermentation startups raised €164M in H1 2024, surpassing the €100M raised in all of 2023 This represents 57% of the €287M raised by the alt protein sector in the same period. By the end of June 2024, biomass fermentation startups had raised just over €115M, a 72% increase from the €67M raised in 2023. Precision fermentation startups raised €49M in the first half of 2024, up from €33M in 2023. Despite increased private investment, the fermentation sector faces bottlenecks due to a lack of infrastructure, and there are calls for government support to scale up facilities. New protein sources are the hottest trend in Petfood R&D. Why? Because they are ethical, sustainable, and of course a point of interest for any scientific person! So, our team couldn’t resist too and as soon as we got samples, we started an investigation. Let’s take a closer look.  Microbiological proteins from gas typically refer to proteins produced by microorganisms (such as bacteria, archaea, or algae) during the metabolism of gases. In our case it was methane (CH4). Methanotrophic bacteria (methane-consuming bacteria) are capable of using methane as their sole source of carbon and energy. They convert methane into biomass, which includes various proteins (high concentration of proteins!). These bacteria play a crucial role in mitigating methane emissions from natural sources like gas and oil production, as well as from human activities such as landfills and agriculture (it’s about sustainability). And it’s definitely not the animal source (it’s about ethics). While microbiological protein production from gases holds promise for sustainability, it is essential to conduct thorough life cycle assessments and consider potential unintended consequences, such as changes in microbial ecology or changes in local ecosystems. Overall, with proper management and optimization, microbiological protein production from gases can contribute to sustainable resource utilization and environmental stewardship. But what about nutrition? We have calculated biological value: it was 68% for cats and 77% for dogs (to compare: poultry by-product meal is 65% for cats and 60% for dogs). So, this protein can help meet pets' dietary requirements and contribute to their overall health and well-being. Microbiological proteins may offer alternative protein sources for pets with food allergies or sensitivities. By diversifying the protein options in pet food formulations, manufacturers can cater to a broader range of dietary needs and preferences among pets. We have started our research to analyze technological properties and influence on palatability. The first results are very promising. While the use of microbiological proteins in pet food is a relatively novel concept, it holds promise as an innovative and sustainable ingredient option. As with any new ingredient, thorough research and evaluation are necessary to ensure its safety, nutritional adequacy, and palatability for pets. Regulatory considerations and consumer acceptance are also important factors to address when incorporating microbiological proteins into pet food formulations.

MATS H2020 project: 🥛 Sustainability Challenges in Dairy Production 🥛 Our recent Causal Loop Diagram analysis of dairy production in Finland has unveiled significant constraints and opportunities for enhancing sustainability. Highlights include: - Production Constraints: The number of dairy animals has plateaued due to land availability and regulatory pressures on manure and GHG emissions. - Balancing Feedback Loops: While production aligns with local demand, low profitability limits potential growth for small and medium farms, and employment. - Policy Implications: Adjusting subsidy frameworks to support sustainable practices could improve profitability while meeting environmental goals.
