My top lessons from leading a half-million-pound research grant as a young food scientist (started when I was 28, nervously 😀 ): 𝟭. 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀. I am fortunate to have connected with Catalyze Group, who introduced us to TFTAK, Neoalgae, and NUCAPS. I heard of TFTAK as a great fermentation research institution through The Good Food Institute. The grant project capitalised on that, combined with our tempeh fermentation expertise as well as NeoAlgae’s and NuCaps’ micronutrient enhancement expertise. 𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. I was initially quite sceptical about having a dedicated work package on project management. However, now I’m very grateful because in the 3 years period of the grant, I could largely keep track of the project’s progress against the meticulously set metrics. 𝟯. 𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗧 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. Periodic audits and reporting were sometimes nerve-wracking. Having to be responsive to unpredictable research outcomes could distract us from our initial direction. Having each detailed task plot against time points in our GANTT chart saved us so much time and stress. 𝟰. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼-𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁. Auditors have the duty to capture whether projects are going on track or not. However, there is not a single R&D project that is entirely predictable. When things progress differently as planned, communicate the reasons, the solutions, and how it would navigate the project any differently. I’m grateful for Better Nature having the opportunity to receive funding from Eurostars grant through Innovate UK. - Photo: Consortium representations in May 2023: Fabio Rinaldo Reimo Priidik David Suárez Montes Raquel Campión Rodríguez
Such great conclusions, thank you for sharing, Dr. A. Driando Ahnan-Winarno! This project was also very interesting and enriching for TFTAK. We gained new skills in the fermentation of filamentous fungi throughout the process. Looking forward to future collaborative projects!
You did so well leading this and very excited to see Tempeh 2.0 brought to life 🤩
So proud of how far you have come Driando ! Everytime I pick a Tempeh at the super market I think of you ..wishing you lots of success 🙌
Thanks Dr. A. Driando Ahnan-Winarno! It was a great collaboration together with the Better Nature team 🙌
The Tempeh Doctor: Co-Founder & CTO at Better Nature 🌟
3wReimo Priidik it was a pleasure working with you 🫡
