🚀 Should we all come back to the office full time? With Amazon planning to bring employees back to the office five days a week the discussion about on-site attendance has flared up again.   According to a recent survey by the ifo Institute – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, Germans spend an average of 17% of our working hours in the home office. Of course, it varies in different industries. In the IT sector and consultancies for example, the numbers jump to 50-58% of employees working from home. Either way, remote work isn’t going anywhere – but people still prefer to come to the office.   💡 I believe that the office plays a crucial role in fostering team dynamics and collaboration. Regular attendance is certainly valuable, but do we need to return to the office full-time? I say: No 🚫– and here’s why:   1.    #Productivity Many colleagues tell me they work more efficiently from home. The flexibility that remote work offers often leads to better results.   2.    #EmployeeSatisfaction A hybrid model supports work-life balance, which increases employee satisfaction and retention. Companies that offer flexibility can attract and retain top talent.   3.    #Diversity & #Inclusion Full-time offices setting can create unintended barriers that exclude certain employees. One topic that keeps coming up is employee frustration at being asked to come to the office to then spend most of the day on zoom/teams, doing email/slack, and individual work. This can all be done from home. In SWAA we surveyed folks about how much of different activities they undertook on a typical WFH day and on a typical office day. They spend only about 80 minutes on in-person activities in a typical office day. The rest of the time they are doing activities that could be done from home. So it appears we have too much commuting for the amount of in-person activities teams need. The solution is try focus in-person activities on office days - this is what most employees find valuable to commute for. Then let employees WFH on the other days.
