Candidacy of next NATO secretary general to be negotiated before July summit — US Envoy The Secretary General’s office is challenged by Acting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and President of Romania Klaus Iohannis WASHINGTON DC, June 12/ NATO member states will be able to negotiate the candidacy of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s successor before the summit that will take place between July 9 and 11 in Washington, US Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith said during a briefing. "Yes, I am absolutely confident that NATO Allies will be able to agree on Jens Stoltenberg’s successor by the time we get to the summit. This has been a topic of conversation across the Alliance for quite some time now. It is a decision that needs to be taken by consensus. We have reached a point where increasingly we’re seeing some momentum on this particular issue, and so I am very confident that we will have an announcement to make by the time we get to the summit in July in just a few weeks’ time," Smith underscored. The Secretary General’s office is challenged by Acting Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and President of Romania Klaus Iohannis. According to the Dutch media, Rutte’s candidacy is currently endorsed by 29 out of 32 NATO member states, including the US. Hungary, Romania and Slovakia oppose his candidacy. Previously, Stoltenberg noted that he will remain in office until October 1, 2024. This decision was approved during the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12 last year. According to numerous media, Stoltenberg’s service was prolonged due to the difficulties with deciding on his successor’s candidacy. Analyst says Zelensky wages media war against Germany Military expert Ralf Thiele said that he expected Germany to make as many vigorous diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine as it does in the Middle East BERLIN, September 11/ Retired German Colonel Ralf Thiele, a military expert, said that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is waging a media war against Germany as he seeks supplies of long-range weapons and Germany’s effective involvement in the conflict, according to his interview with NTV television. "Through an ongoing media war against us - this means the work of the media, through which he seeks to get long-range weapons - he would actually want us to effectively participate in the war," the analyst said. "This would run contrary to the interests I would represent if I were a German politician. We should care about the prosperity and health of our people. I do not want Germany to get involved in a war with Russia." When asked what the situation on the battlefield looks like for Ukraine, he replied tersely: "Bad." "Generally it is as bad as when the Americans did not supply ammunition and combat systems," Thiele said. The analyst also said that he expected Germany to make as many vigorous diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine as it does in the Middle East to resolve the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. "On June 28, Japan’s embassy to Russia was handed a strong protest over the Japanese authorities’ plans to conduct a string of military exercises jointly with Germany and Spain on Hokkaido Island - very close to the borders of the Russian Federation - from July 19 to 25," the ministry said. "It was emphasized that the irresponsible policy of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration puts Tokyo on the path of dangerous escalation in Northeast Asia and in the entire Asia Pacific Region," the Russian Foreign Ministry said. "We have warned them about adequate countermeasures to reinforce defense capabilities and protect the sovereignty of the Russian Federation." Wagenknecht said, addressing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
