🔴Breaking: Yesterday evening, following a distress call from Alarmphone and in coordination with the Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, our crew was able to rescue 46 people in distress at sea, including minors. The survivors had fled Libya and had spent over 24 hours on an overcrowded, unseaworthy wooden boat without life jackets. The sailing ship Safira of MEDITERRANEA Saving Humans supported in the search for the wooden boat. On the instructions of the Italian Rescue Coordination Centre, our crew tried to contact Malta for rescue coordination - without any response. 📷: Wanda Proft / SOS Humanity

Thank you for your support this year! 💛 Our life-saving missions in the Mediterranean would not be possible without the support of our partners. A huge thank you to all our partner organisations! This year has been characterised by challenges, but also by solidarity and humanity. We are grateful to be part of a group of strong humanitarian aid organisations that are helping us to rescue many people in distress at sea and send a political signal. You are an indispensable part of our vision for more humanity and protection for refugees and migrants along one of the world's deadliest migration routes. “Once the mass casualty had begun, time kind of becomes a vortex. It's deeply overwhelming.” A critical rescue during the last mission demanded everything from our crew. Vanessa, our paramedic on board, tells us what happened and how important intensive training is for when an emergency occurs. Our crew is leaving today and preparations for next year are already in full swing. With six rescues and 347 people rescued from distress at sea, our last mission was a great challenge. Our mission at sea and on land is only possible with a committed civil society and strong alliances like United4Rescue - thank you for your great support! 📷: Wanda Proft / SOS Humanity

📢 Position Paper: €327.7 Million for outsourcing refugee protection – SOS Humanity calls for an end to the outsourcing of search and rescue activities and the right to asylum! Rescue people in distress at sea instead of outsourcing refugee protection! The EU is increasingly outsourcing its duty to conduct search and rescue operations and its responsibility to protect the right to asylum to third countries like Libya, Tunisia, and Albania. This externalisation policy undermines the right to asylum, violates international law, and results in suffering and death at the EU's external borders. Instead of protecting people, the EU invests millions in partnerships with states that systematically violate human rights. 🔴 Our Demands: 1️⃣ End partnerships with third countries! The EU must stop training, equipping, and funding actors like the so-called Libyan and Tunisian Coast Guards, which are responsible for systematic human rights violations. 2️⃣ No illegal returns to Libya and Tunisia! People rescued from distress at sea must not be taken to Libya or Tunisia, as neither country is a place of safety. 3️⃣ Protect the right to asylum within the EU! The right to asylum must not be curtailed by externalisation policies. Asylum procedures must be conducted in accordance with European law within the EU. The agreement between Italy and Albania violates international law and must not serve as a model for further outsourcing of asylum procedures. The externalisation of migration control endangers human rights and the rule of law. The EU must stop avoiding its responsibility and take action to uphold human dignity and international obligations! During our last mission, a total of around 350 people were rescued and brought to safety on land. Camilla has been on board Humanity 1 several times as communications coordinator and describes how it is always a special and emotional moment when the survivors disembark. We know that this is only one step on their long path. They will face further challenges and uncertainties, but we are confident that they will find their way and wish them all the best!

🔴Breaking: In the afternoon, the more than 80 survivors were able to disembark in Reggio Calabria. The 24-hour delay by the Italian authorities in assigning a place of safety caused unnecessary uncertainty for the survivors, many of whom were brought on board in a critical condition. Some of them were immediately taken to hospital. We are relieved that everyone is finally ashore and wish them all the best for the future. To mark International Volunteer Day, we want to say THANK YOU to all our volunteers - you are the heart of our lifesaving work at sea! “For me personally, it is important to remain consistent in the current political situation and to stay true to my own moral standards. When you're overwhelmed with populism and scaremongering from all sides, it's helpful to be part of a group that has a similar understanding of humanity. When it all gets too much, you can always remind each other of the importance of humanity” says Lena from the Munich volunteer group. It's people like Lena who show us: We leave no one behind! Whether at information booths, at events or behind the scenes - with your commitment, you show what it means to live humanity. Especially in times of isolation and social coldness, we need this dedication. Together, we are working to save lives and prevent people from dying in the Mediterranean. Thank you for supporting SOS Humanity and standing up with us for a world in which humanity counts. Do you want to get involved too?
