Market Insight Battery Storage: Renewables are dependent on one key technology — BESS Globally, solar and wind capacity continued to grow rapidly in 2023 surpassing the previous year's record of 276 GW by approximately 186 GW, marking a 67% increase (Energy Institute, 2024). At the European level, renewable sources are growing almost as rapidly, accounting for 23% of the energy supplied in 2024, with an expected share of 42.5% by 2030 (PwC, 2024). The more renewables are integrated into the energy system, the more crucial it becomes to find solutions that ensure grid stability and affordability. BESS are essential in the transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Here is why: ⚡ BESS balance supply and demand on the grid by providing fast-acting reserves of energy 📈 BESS store excess energy generated from intermittent renewable sources like wind and solar, and release it when production is low or demand is high 🌐 By discharging energy during peak demand periods, BESS help reduce the need for expensive peak power plants and lower energy costs 🔄 BESS improve the overall efficiency of the energy system by reducing energy losses that occur during the transmission and distribution of power 🛠️ Compared to other forms of energy storage, such as pumped hydro or compressed air, BESS generally has lower maintenance requirements As stated in the Statistical Review of World Energy (Energy Institute, 2024), global BESS implementation grew by 120.8%, with China accounting for 50% of this growth. In Germany the BNetzAG recorded in 2024 a steep increase of 161 GW of battery connection requests. The race for flexibility assets seems to be on. Now, all eyes are on how fast battery storage solutions can be fully implemented into our energy system!? #bess #renewables #marketinsight #energytransition

Together with an amazing group of climate-focused VCs in the Project Frame community, we’ve been working hard on developing a collection of impact case studies on real-life investments. They have now all been released 🎉 and our own Natalie Milde presented our work in a recent webinar (link in comments!) featuring also Sam Levac-Levey of Starshot Capital. At Future Energy Ventures, we’re proud to showcase how we conduct pre-investment impact assessments, as we believe demystifying impact is key to driving meaningful action—and we need investors to converge around a shared language on this topic 🌍✨ These case studies don’t just stop at theory; they come with Excel models and all the details needed for any investor to replicate the methodology for their own investments. Transparency and collaboration are how we scale impact. Now, grab a coffee, enjoy the webinar, and reach out if you have thoughts on the topic 💚 #Innovation #CaseStudy #Sustainability #ClimateTech

Can economic growth and GHG emissions be decoupled? If the answer is no, we are in big trouble. According to PwC, the rate at which the world is decarbonising has fallen to 1.02%, the lowest since 2011. To achieve the 1.5 °C target we need 20x the effort (20.4%). ⚡ Although the total installed volume of renewable capacity globally has achieved a new record of 3.9 TW 2023, fossil fuels still dominate the supply. ⚡ Energy demand has increased by 1.5 $ 2023 – growth of renewables needs to outperform increasing demand to achieve climate goals. ⚡ Decarbonization is not a nice-to-have! Gunther Dütsch, Partner, Net-Zero-Transformation at PwC Deutschland warns us: “Heatwaves, floods, storms: the consequences of exceeding 1.5 °C are not abstract. They translate into real losses - of life, property and livelihoods.” At Future Energy Ventures we are convinced that scalable climate tech is the cornerstone to decarbonising our economy. Any day, week, year we miss our targets will have dramatic consequences. So let’s join forces and accelerate our efforts. It's the investment opportunity of our lifetime🚀 #fev4climate #decarbonisation #energydemand #
