Nearly 1 in 3 women will experience physical or sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. This alarming reality should remind us all: we need to act. On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we join the global #16DaysOfActivism movement to end the horrific and pervasive human rights violation that is gender-based violence (GBV). Added to physical violence and psychological trauma, GBV threatens education and employment opportunities, and removes the right to safety and dignity for millions of women and girls. Vulnerable groups, including those in conflict-affected and disaster areas, and marginalised communities, face even greater risks. Remembrance Day honours more than those who fought. It honours all who have served and continue to do so – military, civilians, emergency responders, and their families – those who have laid down their lives for peace and safety. Today, we pause to respect their great courage and sacrifice. Established in 1919 as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day originally marked the end of World War I and has grown to recognise all those who have fallen in service during conflicts. It reminds us that the impact of war extends beyond the battlefield, affecting families and communities worldwide. True remembrance asks us not just to look back, but to live in a way that values their sacrifice.
