Partners? What's RISK Got to Do With It? As a Strategist who’s worked in risk management for many years, I often get asked why small businesses need to focus on RISK when they're just trying to get off the ground. The answer? Risk isn’t just for the big players; it’s an everyday reality for businesses of every size. And if it’s ignored, it can cause more than just a bump in the road. It can mean the end of the journey entirely, (and I've witnessed this firsthand too!) Let me explain (true story): Two childhood friends: let’s call them Sarah and John 👀, decided to start a business. They shared a passion, pooled their resources, had complimentary skills, and got off to a fantastic start. Things went well at first, AND the business grew quickly. Unfortunately, Sarah and John never took the time to define their roles clearly or protect their partnership legally. There were no contracts, no written agreements, just vibes AND a shared belief that their friendship would see them through. But as profits increased, so did disagreements. Who was in charge of finances? Who had ultimate control over staffing issues? What about the direction of the business? What would happen if one wanted to leave? The lack of clarity soon turned their once-thriving business into a battleground. Ultimately, the partnership fell apart, the business has suffered significantly, and their friendship was left in ruins. The hard lesson? GOOD VIBES & FRIENDSHIP ALONE ISN’T A RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY. So how can you implement a strategy that not only identifies and addresses potential risks, but also creates opportunities from them? At times, growing a business can be like a bad relationship, so it’s crucial you have people who care enough to call you out when you’re making excuses or simply not showing up as they know you’d like to be. 3. Seeking out and securing people in your professional orbit who can consistently make you smile is almost always a net-positive endeavour, even when the context is far removed from any sort of commercial opportunity.
